Sweet & Creamy Homemade Sweet Potato Jam
Easy Sweet Potato Jam Recipe: The Ultimate Way to Use Up Leftover Sweet Potatoes!
Do you have an abundance of sweet potatoes at home? Instead of just boiling, steaming, or roasting them, I decided to turn them into delicious sweet potato jam and puree. Once you have this versatile spread, you can use it in so many dishes like toast, desserts, or even baby food, making it far more practical than plain sweet potatoes. Make it at home, healthily, without any artificial preservatives!
Sweet Potato Jam Ingredients- 300g sweet potatoes (about 3 medium-sized)
- 250g milk (adjust to your preference)
- 30g sugar (adjust sweetness to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly, peel them, and cut them into large chunks. Place them in a pot with enough water to cover and boil until very tender, or steam them. 300g of sweet potato is roughly equivalent to 3 medium-sized ones. Cooking them until soft will make them easier to mash or blend later.
Step 2
Transfer the cooked sweet potatoes to a blender. Add the milk (250g) and sugar (30g). Sweet potatoes can be quite thick, so the blender might struggle initially. To help it blend smoothly, stop and restart the blender intermittently, or add a little more milk until you achieve a lump-free, creamy puree.
Step 3
For an even smoother texture, strain the blended sweet potato puree through a fine-mesh sieve into a saucepan. This step removes any remaining fibrous bits or small lumps, resulting in a more refined jam.
Step 4
Now, place the saucepan over low heat and stir continuously, much like making traditional jam. It’s crucial to stir constantly to prevent sticking and burning at the bottom. Use a spatula to scrape the bottom of the pot as you stir. Continue this process for about 10-15 minutes, or until the mixture thickens to your desired consistency.
Step 5
Once the sweet potato jam is ready, let it cool completely. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Since this homemade jam contains less sugar than store-bought varieties, it’s best to consume it relatively quickly. Enjoy it spread on toast, blended into a smoothie with milk, or as a topping for yogurt!
