Key Ingredients
- 5 ripe tomatoes
- 3 Tbsp granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare fresh and firm tomatoes. Wash them thoroughly under running water and pat them dry. Ensure you clean off any dirt or residue from the surface for a cleaner result.
Step 2
Make shallow cross-shaped incisions on the bottom of each tomato, opposite the stem. Be careful not to cut too deep. Then, remove the core from the top.
Step 3
Fill a pot with a generous amount of water and bring it to a boil over high heat. This water is for blanching the tomatoes, so make sure you have enough.
Step 4
Once the water is boiling vigorously, carefully add the prepared tomatoes to the boiling water. Don’t just let them sit there; gently roll them around in the boiling water. This rolling motion is the secret to easily peeling them.
Step 5
Blanch the tomatoes for about 10-20 seconds, then immediately remove them from the water. The skin should start to loosen and peel away easily. Briefly rinse them under cold water to cool them down, then carefully peel the skin away from the slits with your hands. Be cautious, as they might still be warm!
Step 6
And there you have it – perfectly peeled tomatoes! They look so smooth and translucent, don’t they? You can enjoy them without the skin for a softer texture.
Step 7
Slice the peeled tomatoes into bite-sized pieces. Removing the seeds and slicing them to a moderate thickness will help them absorb the flavors better, making them even more delicious. You can slice them into half-moons or quarters, as you prefer.
Step 8
Place the sliced tomatoes in an airtight container or bento box. Sprinkle the sugar evenly over each layer. Layering the tomatoes and sugar like this helps everything mix well and allows the sugar to dissolve properly.
Step 9
Once all ingredients are layered, close the lid of the container and refrigerate. Let them chill and mature for at least half a day. This allows the tomato juices and sugar to meld together, creating a wonderfully delicious syrup. Enjoy them chilled the next day for an exquisite taste! The sweet and tangy tomato syrup will surely awaken your appetite.
