- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- A pinch of salt (adjust to taste)
- A pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp cooking wine (like mirin)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
To make the hard pumpkin easier to cut and scoop, microwave it for about 2 minutes until slightly softened. Be careful not to overcook it.
Step 2
After microwaving, carefully slice off the top part of the pumpkin to create a lid. You can adjust the height of the lid based on the size of your pumpkin.
Step 3
Using a spoon, gently scoop out the seeds and stringy insides from the pumpkin. It’s important to be delicate to avoid breaking through the pumpkin walls.
Step 4
Once hollowed out, the pumpkin will be about the right size to hold one egg. Prepare two such pumpkin shells.
Step 5
Now, let’s prepare the filling ingredients for the steamed egg. You’ll need the 2 pumpkins, 2 eggs, a little onion, 1 Korean green chili pepper, half a red chili pepper, and a bit of green onion.
Step 6
Just like you would for regular steamed egg, finely chop all the prepared vegetables (onion, green chili, red chili, green onion). If you like it spicy, feel free to increase the amount of Korean green chili.
Step 7
In a bowl, crack the 2 eggs and add all the chopped vegetables. To eliminate any eggy smell and enhance the flavor, add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic as well.
Step 8
It’s time to season the mixture. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic, a pinch of salt (taste and adjust as needed), a pinch of black pepper, 1 tablespoon of cooking wine (like mirin), and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for that nutty aroma. Whisk everything together well.
Step 9
Carefully pour the egg mixture into the hollowed-out pumpkin shells. Fill them about 80-90% full to prevent overflow. Adjust the amount accordingly.
Step 10
Add water to your steamer and place the filled pumpkin halves inside. Cover with a lid and steam over medium heat for about 12 minutes. Check the water level during steaming to prevent it from drying out.
Step 11
After 12 minutes, lift the lid. You’ll see that the pumpkin is perfectly cooked and the steamed egg is set and jiggly. You can test for doneness by inserting a chopstick; if it comes out clean, it’s ready.
Step 12
Be careful not to steam for too long or on high heat, as the steamed egg might puff up excessively, causing the pumpkin to crack or lose its shape. It’s best to turn off the heat and let it finish cooking with residual heat, or remove it promptly to cool.
Step 13
Once done, you can serve the pumpkin steamed egg as is after it cools slightly, or cut it into bite-sized pieces. You can scoop out the filling with a spoon, or use a knife to cut around the edges of the pumpkin for easier eating. Enjoy it in your preferred way.
Step 14
Today, I chose to carefully cut the pumpkin with a knife and enjoy the combination of the pumpkin’s sweetness and the steamed egg’s creaminess. This method allows you to truly savor the flavors of each ingredient.
Step 15
This dish offers a different charm compared to steamed egg made with bell peppers. While bell pepper steamed egg is softer, pumpkin steamed egg has a rustic yet rich flavor that is exceptional. Taste-wise, it’s a couple of notches above regular steamed egg – truly delicious. It’s great as a meal replacement or a delightful snack. Serving it in the whole pumpkin makes it feel even more special.
Step 16
This delicious pumpkin steamed egg is so appealing that it perfectly fits the saying, ‘There might be people who haven’t tried it, but there’s no one who’s only tried it once.’ It’s not only nutritious and healthy but also a triple-threat dish that offers visual appeal and eating pleasure. Despite the humid and damp weather due to the rainy season, I hope you have a bright and refreshed day with delicious food. Thank you. ^^
