Main Ingredients- 1 can Spam (small size)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 5 cloves garlic
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
- 3 stalks green onions
- Pinch of sesame seeds
- 2 bowls cooked rice
Braising Sauce- 200ml water
- 1.5 Tbsp sugar
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or sake)
- 200ml water
- 1.5 Tbsp sugar
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or sake)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, slice the Spam into 8 equal pieces. Finely chop the green onions. Thinly slice the half onion into strips. Slice the garlic cloves thinly (mince if preferred for more intense flavor).
Step 2
Let’s prepare the delicious braising sauce for the Spam! In a bowl, combine 200ml of water, 1.5 Tbsp of sugar, 3 Tbsp of soy sauce, and 2 Tbsp of cooking wine. Whisk well until the sugar is completely dissolved. A well-mixed sauce will ensure the Spam is infused with rich flavor.
Step 3
Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the sliced garlic and sauté gently until fragrant. Cooking the garlic slowly will release its aroma and add depth to the dish.
Step 4
Once the garlic is aromatic, add the thinly sliced onion to the pan. Stir-fry the onions with the garlic until they become translucent and slightly softened. This will bring out their natural sweetness.
Step 5
Now, add the star ingredient – the Spam slices – to the pan. Pan-fry them until they are golden brown and slightly crispy on both sides. Browning the Spam intensifies its savory flavor.
Step 6
When the Spam is nicely browned, pour the prepared braising sauce all over the Spam and vegetables. Increase the heat slightly and let it simmer, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the Spam. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking or burning.
Step 7
Simmer the sauce until it has slightly reduced but still has a bit of liquid remaining. This ensures the Spam stays moist and the sauce is perfect for drizzling over rice. Avoid reducing it completely dry.
Step 8
Finally, assemble your rice bowl! Place a generous portion of hot cooked rice into a bowl. Top with the delicious braised Spam. Add the sautéed onions and garlic. Garnish with the chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Your quick and tasty Spam rice bowl is ready to be enjoyed!
