Tteokbokki Ingredients
  • 150g Tteokbokki rice cakes (about 12 pieces)
  • 1 sheet of square fish cake
  • 1/4 onion
  • 1/4 green onion stalk
  • 1 hard-boiled egg
  • A pinch of sesame seeds (for garnish)

Flavorful Sauce
  • 1.5 cups (300ml) water
  • 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic (generous!)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the ingredients for the tteokbokki. Have about 12 tteokbokki rice cakes ready. Cut one sheet of square fish cake into bite-sized triangular pieces. Thinly slice the onion and diagonally slice the green onion. If you’re adding a hard-boiled egg, fill a pot with enough water to cover the egg, add 1 Tbsp of vinegar and 1 Tbsp of salt, then boil for 15 minutes. After boiling, immediately plunge it into cold water to cool; this makes peeling the shell much easier.

Step 2

Rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under cold water. This prevents them from sticking together and helps achieve a softer texture when cooked. Soaking them in water for about 5 minutes before use will yield even better results.

Step 3

Now, let’s make the star of our garlic tteokbokki: the sauce! It’s very simple, but the taste is guaranteed. In a bowl, combine 2 Tbsp of gochujang, 0.5 Tbsp of gochugaru, 1 Tbsp of sugar, and a generous 1 Tbsp of minced garlic. Mix them well. The pungent flavor of garlic will add a deep taste to your tteokbokki.

Step 4

Pour 1.5 cups (300ml) of water into a pot and stir in the prepared sauce until it’s well dissolved. Once the liquid begins to boil, add the tteokbokki rice cakes, sliced fish cake, and the hard-boiled egg. Finally, add the sliced onion and cook together.

Step 5

Simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and the flavors to meld with the rice cakes. When the cakes are soft and the sauce becomes slightly viscous, it’s almost done. Taste it and feel free to add a little more sugar or gochujang if needed, according to your preference.

Step 6

Lastly, just before serving, add the diagonally sliced green onion and let it simmer for another moment. Turn off the heat and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Your delicious garlic tteokbokki, with its blend of pungent garlic aroma and savory taste, is now complete! It’s best enjoyed warm.
