Introducing a staple Korean side dish, stir-fried fish cakes (eomuk bokkeum), that can be made in a snap for busy evenings! The savory and slightly spicy sauce is perfect for mixing with rice, and it’s an excellent banchan (side dish) to keep in the refrigerator. Let’s make it together with these easy and quick steps!
Main Ingredients- 2-3 sheets of square fish cakes (eomuk)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 1/4 stalk of green onion
Seasoning Ingredients- 4 Tbsp soy sauce (jin ganjang)
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp coarse red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 0.5 Tbsp corn syrup or honey (oligo당)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
- 4 Tbsp soy sauce (jin ganjang)
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp coarse red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 0.5 Tbsp corn syrup or honey (oligo당)
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- Sesame seeds, for garnish
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (about 2cm x 4cm). Finely chop the green onion and thinly slice the onion. Heat 1-2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan or pot over medium-low heat. Add the cut fish cakes and chopped green onion, and stir-fry lightly until the fish cakes become slightly tender and fragrant.
Step 2
Now, pour 4 Tbsp of soy sauce evenly over the stir-fried fish cakes.
Step 3
Add 1 Tbsp of oyster sauce for a deep umami flavor.
Step 4
Add the sliced onion and 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic. It’s best to stir-fry over medium heat at this stage.
Step 5
Sprinkle in some black pepper for a touch of spice. You can adjust the amount to your liking.
Step 6
If you prefer a spicier taste, add 1 Tbsp of coarse red pepper flakes and stir-fry everything together until well combined.
Step 7
Pour in half a cup of water (about 100ml) and stir occasionally while simmering until the liquid has reduced. Let it cook until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients nicely. This step allows the flavors to meld together.
Step 8
If you like it even spicier, add an additional 0.5 Tbsp of fine red pepper flakes. If the sauce seems too watery, the fine red pepper flakes will help absorb some of the moisture, contributing to a delicious stir-fried fish cake dish.
Step 9
Add 1 Tbsp of sugar and 0.5 Tbsp of corn syrup or honey for sweetness. Continue to simmer over low heat until you feel that all the flavors have been absorbed by the ingredients.
Step 10
Finally, turn off the heat, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil for gloss and aroma, and sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish. Your delicious stir-fried fish cakes are ready!
