Recipe Info

  • Category : Rice / Porridge / Rice cake
  • Ingredient Category : Pork
  • Occasion : Everyday
  • Cooking : Deep-fry
  • Servings : 1 serving
  • Cooking Time : Within 5 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Essential Ingredients

  • 1 pre-cooked Tonkatsu (pork cutlet)
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1/3 Scallion (Green Onion)
  • 2 Tbsp Tentsuyu (noodle dipping sauce) or Dashi-based broth seasoned with soy sauce
  • 1/2 Tbsp Sugar
  • 100ml Water
  • 1 Fresh Egg

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the vegetables that will add flavor to your Katsudon. Thinly slice the onion and cut the scallion diagonally. These vegetables will cook down and release their natural sweetness.

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the scallion into similar bite-sized pieces. Slicing them this way allows them to absorb the sauce evenly when cooked together, making them even more delicious.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s create the core sauce base for the Katsudon. In a pot, combine 100ml of water and 2 tablespoons of your favorite Tentsuyu. If you prefer a richer, more intense savory flavor, I highly recommend increasing the Tentsuyu to 3 tablespoons! I personally love a more pronounced taste, so I used 3 tablespoons, and the umami was explosive!

Step 3

Step 4

Add the sliced onion and scallions to the pot and bring to a simmer. The natural sweetness from the vegetables will meld beautifully with the savory depth of the Tentsuyu, creating a fantastic flavor profile.

Step 4

Step 5

Once the sauce starts to gently bubble, you’re almost there! Continue simmering until the onions become translucent and tender. Keep an eye on the heat to prevent burning.

Step 5

Step 6

For the tonkatsu, using a pre-cooked one makes this dish incredibly convenient. While frying can seem intimidating, mastering the oil temperature will allow anyone to achieve perfectly crispy and delicious tonkatsu. (Although, maintaining the right temperature is the real challenge, isn’t it?)

Step 6

Step 7

Cut your nicely fried tonkatsu into easy-to-eat pieces. Slicing them slightly larger than bite-sized will give you a more satisfying texture.

Step 7

Step 8

Place a generous serving of warm rice into a bowl. Arrange the sliced tonkatsu attractively on top of the rice. Then, ladle the delicious sauce you simmered earlier generously over the tonkatsu, allowing it to soak down into the rice.

Step 8

Step 9

Finally, whisk one egg in a small bowl. Pour this beaten egg evenly over the tonkatsu and the surrounding area. Leaving the yolk slightly runny will result in an even more tender and moist texture!

Step 9

Step 10

And there you have it! Your Katsudon is almost ready. Simply place the bowl in the microwave and heat for just 1 minute. You’ll have a clean, delightful homemade Katsudon, complete with tender egg, crispy tonkatsu, and savory sauce. Enjoy your delicious meal!
