Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare all the necessary ingredients for your braised tofu and mackerel pike. Slice the firm tofu into thick pieces, about 2-3 cm. Don’t drain the liquid from the canned mackerel pike; you’ll use it for the sauce. Slice the onion thinly or dice it roughly. Finely mince the Korean green chilies to add a spicy kick. Adjust the number of chilies based on how spicy you like it.
Step 2
Open the can of mackerel pike and carefully remove the fish. Pour the liquid from the can into a large bowl. This flavorful liquid will form the base of your delicious braising sauce.
Step 3
Arrange the sliced firm tofu evenly at the bottom of a pot or a wide pan. This helps prevent the tofu from sticking and ensures it absorbs the sauce well. Next, place the canned mackerel pike on top of the tofu.
Step 4
In the bowl with the mackerel pike liquid, add the minced garlic, gochugaru, soy sauce, black pepper, rice wine, and sugar. Stir everything together until well combined to create the braising sauce. You can adjust the sugar to your preferred sweetness level. Mix in the finely chopped onion and green chilies.
Step 5
Pour the prepared braising sauce evenly over the tofu and mackerel pike in the pot. You can gently tilt the pot to help distribute the sauce. Place the pot over high heat and bring the mixture to a boil.
Step 6
Once the sauce is boiling, reduce the heat to medium. Using a spoon, ladle some of the simmering sauce from the bottom of the pot and pour it over the tofu and mackerel pike. Repeat this basting process occasionally as it cooks to ensure the ingredients are thoroughly infused with flavor.
Step 7
Continue to simmer over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce has reduced and thickened slightly, coating the ingredients beautifully. Just before turning off the heat, drizzle a little sesame oil over the dish for an extra layer of aroma and flavor. Your super quick and easy braised tofu with mackerel pike is ready! It’s fantastic served over rice or as a delightful accompaniment to drinks.
