  • 1/2 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Fresh onions are abundant right now and exceptionally sweet! Today, I’m going to show you how to make a super simple stir-fried onion side dish, perfect for summer. It’s so good, it’ll make you want to eat more rice!

Step 1

Step 2

First, wash the onions thoroughly under running water. Peel them, then slice them into bite-sized pieces – about 1cm thick or into half-moons. There’s no need to salt or pre-treat them; we’ll be stir-frying them directly.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat about 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over low heat. Add 1 tablespoon of minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic; you want to develop a gentle aroma.

Step 3

Step 4

Once you can smell the fragrant garlic, add all the sliced onions to the pan. Increase the heat to medium and stir-fry together. Continue cooking until the onions become translucent. This process will enhance their natural sweetness.

Step 4

Step 5

When the onions are somewhat cooked, add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and 1/2 teaspoon of sugar. Stir-fry well, ensuring the sauce is evenly distributed over the onions. Finally, drizzle in 1 teaspoon of sesame oil for a rich, nutty flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

Stir-fry for just a little longer until the sauce coats the onions nicely, and your delicious stir-fried onions are ready! The perfect balance of onion sweetness and savory soy sauce creates an irresistible side dish. You can adjust the amount of sugar based on the sweetness of your onions or your preference – feel free to omit it if you like. Sprinkle some toasted sesame seeds on top for an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal.
