Ingredients- Canned Ham 200g
- Rice Cakes for Tteokbokki 20 pieces
- Parsley Flakes, a pinch (for garnish)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the rice cakes (tteok). If they are soft and pliable, you can use them as they are. However, if they feel stiff or hard, blanch them in boiling water for about 10-20 seconds. This will soften them, making them much easier to thread onto skewers. If you’re using thick, wide rice cakes meant for Tteokguk (rice cake soup), cut them into bite-sized pieces (about 3-4 cm long) and then slice them in half lengthwise before using.
Step 2
Prepare the canned ham. Cut the ham into pieces that match the length and thickness of your rice cakes, so they look balanced on the skewer. If you’re concerned about the saltiness or additives in canned ham, you can briefly boil the ham slices in water. This helps to reduce the saltiness and remove any unwanted odors. However, using it directly is also perfectly fine and delicious.
Step 3
Now, it’s time to assemble the skewers! Thread the prepared rice cakes and ham pieces onto the skewers, alternating between them. A good pattern is rice cake – ham – rice cake – ham. This arrangement looks appealing and cooks evenly. Make sure to thread them securely so they don’t slip off the ends.
Step 4
Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat and add a little oil. Place the assembled skewers in the pan and cook until they are golden brown and slightly crispy. Adding about 1-2 teaspoons of cooking oil helps prevent sticking and gives them a beautiful, appetizing color. Rotating them gently as they cook will ensure they are evenly browned on all sides, creating a delightful texture contrast between the crispy exterior and the chewy interior.
Step 5
Once all sides are beautifully browned, transfer the ‘Sseuk-tteok Sseuk-tteok’ to a serving plate. For a final touch of flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle a pinch of dried parsley flakes over the skewers. If you don’t have parsley, feel free to use other dried herbs like rosemary or oregano for a different aromatic twist.
