  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • 1 can of whelks (approx. 300g)
  • 2 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp pepperoncino (or 2-3 dried red chilies)
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onion
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 3 pinches of black pepper

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the butter. Butter that has softened at room temperature is easy to work with. If using frozen butter, you can microwave it for about 30 seconds to 1 minute until slightly softened (be careful not to let it melt completely!).

Step 1

Step 2

Add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic to the softened butter and mix well. Let it sit for a moment to allow the garlic flavor to infuse into the butter.

Step 2

Step 3

Add the pepperoncino for a spicy kick. You can add them whole or crush them finely according to your preference. If you don’t like spicy food, you can substitute with finely chopped 청양고추 (Cheongyang peppers).

Step 3

Step 4

Chop fresh green onions. You can also use pre-chopped and frozen green onions. The sweetness of the green onions helps balance the richness.

Step 4

Step 5

Open the can of whelks, drain the liquid, and rinse them lightly under cold water. This helps to reduce any can-specific metallic or fishy taste.

Step 5

Step 6

Heat a lightly oiled pan over medium heat. Add the prepared butter sauce. The butter will melt and release a fragrant aroma. You don’t need to add extra oil. Sauté for about 3 minutes until the sauce turns a light brown color, which helps to bring out the garlic flavor.

Step 6

Step 7

Add the drained whelks to the pan. Season with 1 pinch of salt and 3 pinches of black pepper. Since whelks can be naturally salty, adjust the salt to your taste.

Step 7

Step 8

Stir-fry for another minute, allowing the whelks and sauce to combine well. Your delicious whelk butter stir-fry is ready! It’s best enjoyed immediately while hot.
