Tteokbokki Ingredients- 500g Tteokbokki rice cakes
- 2 sheets of fish cake (eomuk)
- 1/2 stalk of green onion
- 700ml Anchovy-Kelp Broth (or rice water, plain water)
- 2 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust to spice preference)
- 2 Tbsp Soy Sauce (regular or Korean soup soy sauce)
- 2 Tbsp Sugar (adjust sweetness to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Begin by preparing all the ingredients for your Tteokbokki. Rinse the rice cakes under cold water to prevent them from sticking together. Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm each. Chop the green onion into roughly 3-4 cm lengths.
Step 2
In a pot or a wide pan, pour in the 700ml of prepared broth. Add 2 tablespoons of gochujang and stir well to dissolve it completely. Use chopsticks or a whisk to ensure there are no lumps.
Step 3
Next, add 2 tablespoons of soy sauce to enhance the savory flavor. You can use either regular soy sauce or Korean soup soy sauce based on what you have available.
Step 4
To add sweetness, incorporate 2 tablespoons of sugar. Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar to suit your preference; you can add a little more if you like it sweeter.
Step 5
Before the sauce comes to a full boil, add the 2 sliced fish cakes. This step allows the fish cakes to absorb the flavors of the sauce, making them even more delicious. Let it simmer for a moment after adding the fish cakes.
Step 6
Once the broth and seasonings are well combined and start to boil, add the prepared Tteokbokki rice cakes. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
Step 7
As the rice cakes begin to soften, add the chopped green onions. Adding green onions not only makes the dish visually appealing but also contributes a subtle sweetness and aroma.
Step 8
While the Tteokbokki is simmering, stir in 2 tablespoons of gochugaru to add a spicy kick. Adjust the amount of chili flakes according to how spicy you prefer your Tteokbokki. Add more if you enjoy extra heat.
Step 9
Cook until all ingredients are well combined, the sauce has thickened to your liking, and the rice cakes have absorbed the delicious flavors. Check to ensure the rice cakes are tender and the sauce is well-infused. Your delicious Tteokbokki is ready to be enjoyed hot!
