Spicy & Sweet Tteokbokki: A Nostalgic Snack Loved by Kids
Authentic Spicy & Sweet Tteokbokki Recipe for the Whole Family
Remember the delicious snacks your mom used to make? This Spicy Tteokbokki, seasoned with gochugaru (red pepper powder), offers a delightful kick of spiciness that’s perfectly balanced with sweetness. It’s a beloved Korean comfort food that both children and adults adore. Let’s recreate this classic taste at home with simple ingredients.
Tteokbokki Ingredients- 1 pack Tteokbokki rice cakes (approx. 300g)
- 1 pack fish cakes (approx. 200g)
- 3 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili powder, fine)
- 1 Tbsp Sugar
- 1/2 Green onion (generous amount)
- 2 Coin-shaped broth cubes (or 300ml anchovy-kelp broth)
- 1 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup/oligosaccharide, adjust for sweetness)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s begin making this crowd-pleasing, spicy and sweet Tteokbokki that the whole family will love!
Step 2
In a pot, add 300ml of water (or water with 2 coin broth cubes dissolved). Stir in 3 Tbsp of gochujang, 1 Tbsp of fine gochugaru, and 1 Tbsp of sugar until the paste is well dissolved. If you prefer it spicier, feel free to add a little more gochugaru.
Step 3
Lightly rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes under running water. If they are stuck together, gently separate them, then add them directly to the simmering sauce. Cook until the rice cakes become soft and chewy.
Step 4
Cut the rectangular fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (triangles or rectangles). Once the rice cakes are tender, add the fish cakes and cook them together. The fish cakes will absorb the delicious sauce.
Step 5
For added flavor, prepare a generous amount of green onion, sliced diagonally. Add it towards the end of cooking to preserve its fresh aroma, similar to the fish cakes.
Step 6
To further enhance the spiciness, add an additional 1 Tbsp of fine gochugaru. At this stage, you can adjust the seasoning slightly with salt or soy sauce if needed.
Step 7
Now, reduce the heat to low and simmer for another 1-2 minutes, allowing the sauce to fully coat the rice cakes and fish cakes. Be careful not to overcook, as the rice cakes might become mushy or the sauce might burn. Finally, stir in 1 Tbsp of oligodang for a glossy finish and added sweetness.
Step 8
Your delicious Spicy & Sweet Tteokbokki, perfect for the whole family, is ready! It tastes best when served hot.
