This dish is perfect as a side for rice or a snack when you have no appetite. We’ve adapted a popular recipe so you can easily enjoy it at home. (Ingredients may differ slightly from the original recipe.)
Main Ingredients- 640g Square Eomuk (Fish Cake)
- 100g Tteokguk Tteok (Rice Cakes for Soup)
- 1 medium Onion
- 1/2 stalk Green Onion (Scallion)
- 2 Korean Green Chilies (Cheongyang peppers)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
1. Prepare the eomuk and tteok. First, cut the square eomuk into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3 cm wide). If your tteokguk tteok is hard, soak it in cold water briefly or pour hot water over it to soften. (For about 100g, if the tteok is very hard, pour hot water over it for 1-2 minutes, drain, and then use.)
Step 2
2. Chop the vegetables. Slice the onion thinly and the green onion diagonally. Korean green chilies will add a spicy kick; remove the seeds and chop them finely. (Adjust spiciness by the amount of chilies used.)
Step 3
3. Make the delicious seasoning sauce. In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, and 1 Tbsp fish sauce. Mix well. Adding fish sauce will significantly enhance the savory flavor!
Step 4
4. Start stir-frying. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced onion first and stir-fry until it becomes translucent; this will bring out the onion’s natural sweetness. Once the onion is somewhat cooked, add the sliced eomuk and prepared tteok, and stir-fry them together.
Step 5
5. Add the seasoning sauce and let it simmer. Once the tteok and eomuk are well combined in the pan, pour in all the prepared seasoning sauce. Stir and cook, ensuring the sauce coats everything evenly. Be mindful of the heat to prevent the sauce from burning; medium-low heat is recommended.
Step 6
6. Add the green onion and chilies to finish. When the sauce starts to thicken slightly, add the chopped green onion and Korean green chilies. Stir-fry briefly until the vegetables are just tender. Stir-frying too long will make them lose their texture.
Step 7
8. Add the final touch of flavor. Just before turning off the heat, add gochugaru (optional) and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Quickly stir everything together for a perfectly cooked spicy and sweet tteok and eomuk stir-fry! It’s best enjoyed hot.
