Elevating Store-Bought Salted Cuttlefish Roe with Simple Seasoning

Spicy & Sweet Seasoned Squids: Enhanced Flavor Recipe

The weather has been surprisingly chilly lately, hasn’t it? Waking up to a warm floor meant the heating kicked in, even though it’s past mid-April. This cold snap has made me feel a bit sluggish. After waking up this morning, I ate some bread and took another nap. Even after waking up again, I still felt sluggish and just had a few cups of coffee. Rummaging through the fridge, I decided to add some extra seasoning to the salted cuttlefish roe I had bought. This simple addition transforms the dish into a flavor explosion, perfect for a side with rice!

Ingredients

  • Store-bought salted cuttlefish roe 400g (add minced garlic if your product has very little)
  • 3 Cheongyang chili peppers
  • 2 Tbsp Oligodang (corn syrup or honey)
  • 2 Tbsp Perilla oil (or sesame oil)
  • 2 Tbsp Toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

This is the salted cuttlefish roe I often buy. As you can see, it has a good amount of garlic in it, making it delicious even on its own. However, adding just a few extra seasonings can unlock a whole new level of flavor. Let me show you how to make your store-bought salted cuttlefish roe even more special!

Step 1

Step 2

I’ve transferred the salted cuttlefish roe to a bowl. See those big pieces of garlic? We’ll keep them as they are for this recipe. If the salted cuttlefish roe you bought is lacking in garlic, you can add about 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic. The pungent aroma of garlic will further enhance the overall flavor profile of the cuttlefish roe.

Step 2

Step 3

Finely chop 3 Cheongyang chili peppers to add a fresh, spicy kick. You can remove the seeds if you want to moderate the heat. The spiciness of the peppers will cut through any richness and balance the flavors beautifully.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s add the delicious seasonings! Add 2 tablespoons of Oligodang for sweetness, 2 tablespoons of perilla oil for a rich, nutty aroma (sesame oil can be used as a substitute), and finally, 2 tablespoons of toasted sesame seeds to complete the nutty flavor. Mix everything together thoroughly with a spoon until well combined. The exact amount of seasoning can be adjusted based on the original taste of your salted cuttlefish roe, allowing you to customize it to your preference for an even more delightful experience.
