Main Ingredients- 10 rice cakes (tteok, approx. 200g)
- 3 flat fish cakes (eomuk)
- 3 tube fish cakes (eomuk)
- 1/2 green onion stalk
- A handful of cabbage
- A handful of carrots
- 1 king oyster mushroom
- A little bell pepper (various colors if possible)
- 300ml water
Seasoning- 2.5 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 0.5 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp maesilcheong (plum syrup, adjust sweetness)
- 1/3 Tbsp ginger syrup (or a pinch of minced ginger)
- 1/3 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2.5 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 0.5 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp maesilcheong (plum syrup, adjust sweetness)
- 1/3 Tbsp ginger syrup (or a pinch of minced ginger)
- 1/3 Tbsp minced garlic
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, lightly rinse the rice cakes under running water to prevent them from sticking together. Place the rinsed rice cakes into your cooking pan. Rice cakes are usually soft enough to cook immediately.
Step 2
Cut the flat and tube fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (e.g., triangles or strips) and add them to the pan with the rice cakes. Pour in 300ml of fresh water, which will form the base of our delicious tteokbokki sauce.
Step 3
Now, let’s make the sauce – the heart of the tteokbokki’s flavor! Combine all the seasoning ingredients in a bowl: gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, maesilcheong, ginger syrup, and minced garlic. Mix them well until smooth, then pour the sauce into the pan. Making the sauce separately beforehand ensures the flavors blend evenly for a more delicious result.
Step 4
Julienne the cabbage and carrots for a nice crunch. Slice the bell pepper similarly. Trim the base of the king oyster mushroom and slice it. Add all these prepared vegetables and the mushroom to the pan. Give everything a gentle stir to combine the ingredients with the sauce.
Step 5
It’s time to cook! Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once it’s bubbling vigorously, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer for about 5 minutes. Remember to stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom. It’s incredibly easy!
Step 6
Your tteokbokki is almost ready when the rice cakes have plumped up nicely and the sauce has thickened, clinging to the rice cakes with a rich, glossy coating. Taste it at this stage and adjust seasoning or sweetness if needed.
Step 7
Finally, add the chopped green onion and cook for another minute or so to finish. Your delicious rice tteokbokki is ready to be enjoyed! It’s best served hot.
