Seasoning Ingredients

  • Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 0.5 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce 1 Tbsp
  • Oligodang (corn syrup) 1.5 Tbsp (adjust sweetness to taste)
  • Toasted sesame seeds, a pinch
  • Minced green onion 1 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare your 17 rice cakes for the tteokbokki. If they are stuck together, gently separate them. Bring a pot of water to a boil, add the rice cakes, and boil for just 1-2 minutes until they become soft and pliable. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become mushy. Drain the boiled rice cakes thoroughly in a colander and place them in a wide pan, ready for the next step.

Step 2

Now, it’s time to add the delicious seasoning to the rice cakes. Without turning on the heat yet, add all the seasoning ingredients directly into the pan with the rice cakes: 0.5 Tbsp gochugaru, 1 Tbsp soy sauce, 1.5 Tbsp oligodang, and 1 Tbsp minced green onion. Gently mix everything together with your hands or a spatula, ensuring the seasoning coats the rice cakes evenly. It’s important to let the sauce meld with the rice cakes before cooking.

Step 3

Once the seasoning has had a moment to coat the rice cakes, place the pan over medium heat on the stove. Stir continuously to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Cook for about 3-5 minutes, or until the outer surface of the rice cakes looks slightly golden and the sauce has thickened, giving the rice cakes a glossy sheen. Then, turn off the heat.

Step 4

Transfer the deliciously stir-fried Gireum Tteokbokki to a serving plate. Sprinkle a pinch of toasted sesame seeds over the top for an extra nutty aroma and flavor.
