We previously enjoyed a delicious stir-fried beef brisket with bean sprouts, but this time, we decided to try a Dubanjiang Beef Brisket Rice Bowl using doubanjiang for the first time. This dish offers a unique flavor profile that’s hard to forget, making it a delightful and satisfying meal.

Main Ingredients

  • Beef brisket (thinly sliced) 150g
  • Bean sprouts 1 handful (approx. 100g)
  • Onion 0.5 medium
  • Egg yolk 1
  • Steamed rice 1 serving
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Sesame seeds to garnish

Flavorful Sauce

  • Doubanjiang (Chili Bean Paste) 1 Tbsp
  • Oyster sauce 1 Tbsp
  • Oligosaccharide (or sugar) 1 Tbsp
  • Minced garlic 1 Tbsp
  • Soy sauce 0.5 Tbsp

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Heat a non-stick frying pan over medium-low heat. Add the 150g of thinly sliced beef brisket and cook until it’s nicely browned. Cooking it without added oil helps to enhance its natural flavor and render some of the fat.

Thinly slice half an onion. Slicing them thinly ensures they cook evenly and quickly.

Rinse the bean sprouts thoroughly under cold running water. After washing, drain them well in a colander to remove excess water. Excess moisture can make the dish soggy.

In a small bowl, combine 1 Tbsp doubanjiang, 1 Tbsp oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide (or sugar), 1 Tbsp minced garlic, and 0.5 Tbsp soy sauce. Whisk everything together until well combined to create the sauce. This sauce is key to the delicious flavor of the rice bowl!

In the same pan used for the beef (add a little oil if it’s too dry), sauté the sliced onions over medium heat until they become translucent and fragrant. The onions will soften and release their natural sweetness.

Add the drained bean sprouts and the cooked beef brisket to the pan with the sautéed onions. Pour the prepared sauce over everything. Increase the heat to high and stir-fry quickly to ensure the sauce coats all the ingredients evenly. It’s important to cook quickly over high heat to keep the bean sprouts slightly crisp.

Season with a pinch of black pepper and give it one final stir to combine all the ingredients and sauce. The peppery aroma adds another layer of flavor.
