Main Ingredients

  • 200g rectangular fish cakes
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1/3 stalk green onion

Stir-frying & Finishing

  • A little cooking oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • A pinch of toasted sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the fish cakes. If using rectangular fish cakes, cut them into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm wide. Peel the onion and thinly slice it into shreds. Wash the green onion and cut it diagonally. Prepping the ingredients like this makes the cooking process much smoother.

Step 1

Step 2

Briefly blanch the cut fish cakes in boiling water for about 15-30 seconds. This step removes any excess oil and impurities, resulting in a cleaner taste. After blanching, rinse the fish cakes under cold water and squeeze out any excess moisture.

Step 2

Step 3

Heat a little cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the prepared fish cakes, shredded onion, and green onion. Stir-fry until the fish cakes are lightly golden and the onions become translucent. Stir-frying brings out the individual flavors of the ingredients, making the dish more delicious.

Step 3

Step 4

Once the onions start to turn translucent, add all the pre-mixed sauce ingredients (soy sauce, cooking wine, corn syrup, gochugaru, sugar, minced garlic, black pepper). Stir-fry together with the fish cakes and vegetables for about 2 more minutes, allowing the sauce to coat everything evenly. Be careful not to burn the ingredients by adjusting the heat as needed.

Step 4

Step 5

Finally, just before turning off the heat, drizzle in the sesame oil and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Give it a gentle toss to combine, and your delicious spicy and sweet braised fish cakes are ready! They are great served warm, or cooled down for lunchboxes or as a kimbap filling.
