Flavorful Sauce- 4 Tbsp soy sauce
- 4 Tbsp vinegar
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 5 Tbsp canned whelk liquid
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (roasted)
- 1.5 Tbsp sugar (adjust sweetness to taste)
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup or cooking syrup
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 4 Tbsp soy sauce
- 4 Tbsp vinegar
- 1 Tbsp minced garlic
- 5 Tbsp canned whelk liquid
- 1 Tbsp sesame seeds (roasted)
- 1.5 Tbsp sugar (adjust sweetness to taste)
- 1 Tbsp corn syrup or cooking syrup
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Let’s start by making the delicious sauce. In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 4 Tbsp vinegar, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 5 Tbsp canned whelk liquid, 1 Tbsp sesame seeds, 1.5 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp corn syrup, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Mix well until the sugar is dissolved. Taste and adjust seasoning: add more soy sauce if it’s too bland, more sugar or syrup if you prefer it sweeter, and more vinegar if you like it tangier.
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the vegetables. Wash the cucumber thoroughly, remove the seeds, and julienne it thinly. Cut the scallions into bite-sized pieces. Drain the canned whelks and cut them into bite-sized pieces if they are too large. (Don’t discard the whelk liquid; we’re using it in the sauce!)
Step 3
Add the prepared scallions and whelks to the sauce and gently toss to combine. Let it marinate for a few minutes to allow the whelks to absorb some flavor. (It’s best not to add the cucumber at this stage, as it can become soggy.)
Step 4
Time to cook the somyeon noodles to perfection! Bring a large pot of water to a rolling boil and add the somyeon noodles. Cook for about 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking. Once cooked, rinse the noodles thoroughly under cold running water, rubbing them gently to remove excess starch. This step ensures the noodles are chewy and firm. Drain them well in a colander.
Step 5
Now, let’s assemble the dish beautifully. Place the drained somyeon noodles into a serving bowl.
Step 6
Top the noodles generously with the marinated whelks and scallions. Arrange the julienned cucumber on top. Sprinkle with extra sesame seeds for garnish. Your delicious Baek Jong-won-style Scallion and Whelk Somyeon is now ready to be enjoyed! Mix everything together and savor the flavors!
