Main Ingredients

  • 8 pieces of Garae-tteok (rice cakes, substitute with tteokbokki cakes)
  • 1 pack of fish cakes (approx. 100g)
  • 150g of Fuzhu (dried or fresh)
  • 8-10 Vienna sausages
  • 1 pack of instant ramen noodles
  • 6 strips of bacon (thicker cut bacon recommended for extra flavor)
  • 800ml of water

Spicy & Sweet Sauce

  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, fine)
  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, spicy type – adjust to your spice preference)
  • 2 Tbsp garlic powder (or 1 Tbsp minced fresh garlic)
  • 1 Tbsp onion powder (or 1 Tbsp onion juice)
  • 4 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp chicken stock powder (or MSG)
  • 1 tsp Dasida (beef seasoned stock)
  • 2 Tbsp corn syrup (for shine and sweetness)
  • 50ml water (for sauce consistency adjustment)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the tteok (rice cakes) and fuzhu. Cut the garae-tteok into bite-sized pieces, about 5-7 cm long. If using dried fuzhu, soak it in cold water for about 30 minutes until softened. If using fresh fuzhu, simply rinse it under running water.

Step 1

Step 2

Now, let’s mix the sauce that will make this rabokki incredibly delicious! In a bowl, combine the fine gochugaru, spicy gochugaru, garlic powder, onion powder, sugar, oyster sauce, chicken stock, Dasida, corn syrup, and 50ml of water. Stir well until the sugar dissolves. Letting the sauce sit for a bit can allow the flavors to meld beautifully.

Step 2

Step 3

It’s time to start cooking! In a wide pot, add 800ml of water and the prepared sauce mixture. Bring it to a boil over high heat. Once the water is rapidly boiling, add the soaked fuzhu, Vienna sausages, tteok, fish cakes, and ramen noodles in this order. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the tteok is soft and chewy, and the ramen noodles are perfectly cooked. Be careful not to overcook, as the tteok can become mushy!

Step 3

Step 4

While the rabokki is simmering, let’s get the bacon crispy! Heat a frying pan over medium heat and lay the bacon strips flat. Cook them until they are golden brown and slightly crisp on both sides. Crispy bacon adds an amazing flavor and texture contrast to the rabokki. Once cooked, place the bacon on a paper towel to drain excess grease.

Step 4

Step 5

And now, the grand finale! Serve your delicious rabokki in a deep bowl for a generous presentation. Transfer the cooked rabokki to the bowl and generously top it with the sliced crispy bacon. The corn syrup in the sauce will give it a glossy, luscious finish!

Step 5

Step 6

With such a delightful dish, don’t worry too much about the calories for now! Enjoy the perfect harmony of spicy, sweet, and savory flavors, combined with the chewy tteok, tender fuzhu, springy noodles, and crispy bacon. This rabokki is a true feast for the senses!
