Spicy Seasoned Bean Sprouts
Quick & Easy Red Seasoned Bean Sprouts: Ready in 5 Minutes!
Spicy seasoned bean sprouts, with their delightful crunch and savory kick, are a classic side dish that perfectly complements any meal. They’re incredibly quick to make, especially if you have some bean sprouts left over from making bean sprout soup. While a milder version is delicious, adding gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) elevates the flavor profile to a vibrant, spicy level that will awaken your taste buds. This is the perfect go-to banchan (side dish) to have on hand, especially when you need something simple yet satisfying. Let’s get started!
Basic Ingredients- 2 handfuls of bean sprouts (approx. 200g)
- 1/2 Tbsp coarse salt (for boiling)
- 3cm section of the white part of a scallion
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
Seasoning Ingredients- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare 2 handfuls (about 200g) of freshly washed bean sprouts. In a pot, add enough water to generously cover the bean sprouts, along with 1/2 tablespoon of coarse salt. Bring to a boil over high heat with the lid on. Once boiling, let it steam for about 3-5 minutes until the bean sprouts are tender but still have a slight crunch. (Tip: Avoid overcooking the bean sprouts, as they can become mushy.)
Step 2
Drain the blanched bean sprouts thoroughly using a sieve. Transfer the drained bean sprouts to a mixing bowl. Add 1/2 tablespoon of minced garlic and 1 tablespoon of finely chopped scallions to the bowl.
Step 3
Add the seasoning ingredients: 2 tablespoons of gochugaru for a spicy kick, 1/2 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds for nutty flavor, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce for savory depth, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for aromatic richness.
Step 4
Put on a pair of disposable gloves. Gently toss and mix the bean sprouts with the seasonings using your hands. Be careful not to mash the bean sprouts; the goal is to evenly coat them without damaging their texture.
Step 5
Your delicious spicy seasoned bean sprouts are ready! The delightful crunch of the bean sprouts combined with the perfectly balanced spicy and savory seasoning makes this a fantastic side dish. Freshly made banchan like this is wonderful with any meal, and it’s especially delicious mixed into a bowl of rice. Enjoy this easy-to-make, flavorful dish!
