This is an incredibly easy recipe to make the beloved Korean side dish, stir-fried fish cakes, in just 10 minutes! The flavor can vary greatly depending on the seasoning ratio, so I’m always trying new methods. This time, I’ve prepared it with a special soy sauce and chili powder-based seasoning that’s both spicy and full of umami. It’s a perfect ‘rice thief’!

Main Ingredients

  • 2 sheets of square fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 1/4 onion
  • 1/4 carrot
  • 1/4 stalk of green onion
  • 1 cheongyang chili pepper (optional)
  • 1 Tbsp cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

First, cut the square fish cakes into bite-sized pieces. Thinly slice the onion and carrot into strips. Chop the green onion diagonally, and if using the cheongyang chili pepper, remove the seeds and mince it finely. (While not pictured, adding the chili pepper will enhance the spicy flavor.)

Prepare the delicious seasoning by mixing all the seasoning ingredients. Combine 1/2 Tbsp chili powder, 1/2 Tbsp soy sauce, 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic, 1/2 Tbsp plum extract, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, 1 Tbsp water, and a pinch of sesame seeds for a nutty aroma. Mix well.

Now, let’s start cooking! Heat 1 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the prepared fish cakes, onion, carrot, and cheongyang chili pepper, and stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until the ingredients are slightly cooked.

Once the onion becomes translucent, add the prepared seasoning and stir-fry, making sure the seasoning coats the ingredients evenly. Be careful to control the heat so the seasoning doesn’t burn. Finally, add the diagonally sliced green onion and stir-fry for about 30 seconds more. Your delicious stir-fried fish cakes are ready!
