The savory taste of the sea combined with the delightful crunch of vegetables makes it a crowd-pleaser for all ages. Let’s get started!
Main Ingredients- 1 small calamari, cleaned (approx. 100-150g)
- 1/4 stalk of green onion (white part)
- 1/5 carrot (approx. 30g)
- 1/4 onion (approx. 50g)
Seasoning & Cooking Ingredients- 1.5 Tbsp cooking oil or olive oil
- 1 pinch of salt (approx. 0.5g)
- A dash of black pepper
- 1 bowl of cooked rice (warm rice recommended)
- 0.5 Tbsp oyster sauce (adjust to taste)
- 1.5 Tbsp cooking oil or olive oil
- 1 pinch of salt (approx. 0.5g)
- A dash of black pepper
- 1 bowl of cooked rice (warm rice recommended)
- 0.5 Tbsp oyster sauce (adjust to taste)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the vegetables that will enhance the flavor of your fried rice. Peel the carrot and dice it into small pieces about 2-3mm in size. Dice the onion similarly. Chop the white parts of the green onion finely. Dicing the vegetables this small helps them meld beautifully with the rice for a more cohesive and delicious fried rice.
Step 2
Heat a pan over medium heat and add 1.5 tablespoons of cooking oil. Add the prepared carrot, onion, and green onion, and stir-fry. Make sure to keep stirring to prevent the vegetables from sticking to the pan. Sauté for about 2-3 minutes until the onions become translucent and the natural sweetness of the vegetables is released. This step is crucial for building flavor.
Step 3
Once the vegetables are softened, add the small, chopped calamari to the pan. It’s best to cook the calamari over high heat to quickly seal in its juices and prevent it from becoming tough. As soon as the calamari turns opaque white, season with a pinch of salt and a dash of black pepper. Be careful not to overcook, as this can make the calamari rubbery.
Step 4
Now, add the cooked rice to the pan and stir-fry until it’s well combined with all the ingredients. Using warm rice will help prevent clumping and result in fluffier fried rice. Once the rice is mixed in, add 0.5 tablespoon of oyster sauce for an umami boost. Taste and adjust the amount of oyster sauce according to your preference. Continue to stir-fry for another 1-2 minutes until everything is well incorporated.
Step 5
Transfer the delicious calamari fried rice to a serving bowl. For an extra touch, you can sprinkle some shredded seaweed (gim) or sesame seeds on top. Enjoy your simple yet impressive one-bowl meal!
