Spicy & Flavorful! Super Easy Chili Oil Made with a Ramen Pot

A Simple Recipe for Making Chili Oil at Home Using a Ramen Pot

While a ramen pot typically heats up to about 100°C, which is lower than the 180°C boiling point of cooking oil, it’s perfect for safely and easily infusing oil with the rich aroma of chili peppers. This method allows you to create flavorful chili oil at home with minimal effort and controlled heat.

Essential Ingredients
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • 0.5 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 0.5 Tbsp minced ginger
  • 1 handful chopped green onions (approx. 30g)
  • 1/2 cup (125ml) cooking oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the aromatic ingredients that will infuse your chili oil. Measure out 1 tablespoon of chili powder, 0.5 tablespoon of freshly minced garlic, 0.5 tablespoon of minced ginger for a hint of pungency, and a handful of finely chopped green onions for added freshness and flavor.

Step 2

Now, it’s time to use the ramen pot. Pour 1/2 cup (125ml) of cooking oil into the ramen pot. When you turn on the pot, the oil will warm up slightly and then automatically shut off after about 1 minute. This is because the ramen pot’s maximum temperature is around 100°C, which is sufficient to extract the flavors from the chili powder and aromatics. Even if the oil looks calm, don’t worry! Add all the prepared chili powder, chopped green onions, minced garlic, and minced ginger into the warmed oil and stir well. Then, let the mixture cool down completely. If you want to intensify the flavor further, after the oil has completely cooled, you can turn the ramen pot on again and let it heat for another minute until it automatically shuts off. (Important: The pot won’t turn back on immediately if it’s still hot for safety reasons; make sure it cools down entirely before reheating.)

Step 3

Once the oil has cooled completely and has turned a vibrant red, carefully strain the chili oil through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean storage container. Ensure you capture the clear, infused oil, leaving any sediment behind.

Step 4

Let’s add an extra touch for enhanced flavor! Prepare 2-3 dried chili flakes, the kind that sometimes comes with pizza deliveries, and add them to the bottle of chili oil. These will contribute a subtle, nuanced heat and deeper aroma to your homemade chili oil.

Step 5

Your delicious homemade chili oil is now ready! Use it sparingly whenever you need to add a rich, spicy kick to your dishes. It’s perfect for stir-fries, dressings, bibimbap, and so much more. Enjoy the fantastic flavor!
