Introducing Tteokbokki, a beloved Korean snack featuring chewy rice cakes coated in a delicious, savory sauce. Perfect for kids’ snacks or when you need a comforting treat. This recipe offers a simple and detailed guide.
Main Ingredients- 400g Tteokbokki rice cakes (wheat or rice flour)
- 2 sheets of fish cake (eomuk)
- 1 stalk of green onion
Sauce Ingredients- 2 cups water
- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 4 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup (adjust sweetness)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp Dashida (MSG-based soup stock)
- 1/2 tsp MSG (optional)
- 2 cups water
- 1 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp soy sauce
- 4 Tbsp corn syrup or rice syrup (adjust sweetness)
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp Dashida (MSG-based soup stock)
- 1/2 tsp MSG (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Prepare the tteokbokki rice cakes. You can use either soft wheat flour cakes (mill-tteok) or chewy rice flour cakes (ssal-tteok), depending on your preference. If the rice cakes are hard, soak them in cold water for a short while to soften them before use.
Step 2
Let’s make the delicious tteokbokki sauce! In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp of gochujang, 2 Tbsp of soy sauce, and 4 Tbsp of corn syrup (or rice syrup) – you can adjust the sweetness to your liking. Add 1 tsp of Dashida for a rich umami flavor, and optionally, 1/2 tsp of MSG for an even deeper taste. Mix all the sauce ingredients thoroughly until well combined.
Step 3
Prepare the additional ingredients for the tteokbokki. Slice 1 green onion diagonally to add a fragrant aroma, and cut 2 sheets of fish cake into bite-sized pieces (e.g., triangles or strips).
Step 4
Now, let’s start cooking the tteokbokki. Pour 2 cups (400ml) of water into a pot and dissolve the pre-mixed sauce. Once the sauce begins to boil, add 1 tsp of minced garlic and stir well to infuse the garlic flavor.
Step 5
When the sauce comes to a boil, add the prepared fish cakes and green onions. Let it simmer for a bit longer to allow the ingredients to absorb the flavors.
Step 6
Finally, add the tteokbokki rice cakes to the pot. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, or until the rice cakes are soft and have absorbed the sauce. Stir occasionally to prevent the rice cakes from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Your delicious Tteokbokki is now complete! Feel free to serve with a boiled egg or deep-fried seaweed rolls (gimmari) for an even more satisfying meal.
