Learn how to easily make delicious Tteokbokki at home, a beloved Korean comfort food. The perfect harmony of spicy-sweet sauce and chewy rice cakes is exceptional, and you can enjoy a special flavor with simple ingredients.
Tteokbokki Ingredients- 18 pieces of tteokbokki rice cakes (use soft ones if possible)
- 2 sheets of fish cake
- A moderate amount of green onion (cut into large pieces)
- A moderate amount of carrot (julienned)
Spicy & Sweet Sauce- 1.5 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp corn syrup or oligosaccharide (adjust sweetness to your liking)
- 1 cup (approx. 200ml) anchovy-kelp broth
- 1.5 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 3 Tbsp corn syrup or oligosaccharide (adjust sweetness to your liking)
- 1 cup (approx. 200ml) anchovy-kelp broth
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, rinse the tteokbokki rice cakes lightly in cold water to separate any stuck together pieces. Also, rinse the fish cakes under running water and cut them into bite-sized pieces (about 2-3cm). Place the rice cakes and fish cakes together in a pot or pan.
Step 2
Pour in 1 cup of the prepared anchovy-kelp broth, then add all the gochujang, soy sauce, and corn syrup. Stir with a spoon to dissolve the gochujang completely, ensuring the sauce ingredients are well combined. Start cooking over high heat, and wait until the sauce comes to a rolling boil.
Step 3
Once the tteokbokki sauce starts boiling, add the large-cut green onions and julienned carrots. Lower the heat slightly to medium at this stage to ensure the rice cakes cook to a chewy texture and the sauce doesn’t reduce too much.
Step 4
Continue to simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally with a spoon, until the sauce thickens to a glaze-like consistency. The tteokbokki is ready when the rice cakes are well-coated with the sauce and the fish cakes and vegetables are tender. It’s best enjoyed hot!
