Spicy and Sweet Stir-fried Sundae
Tonight’s Dinner Recommendation, Perfect for a Drink! Baek Jong-won’s Sundae Stir-fry (with Sauce Recipe)
Let’s make Sundae Stir-fry! Honestly, it’s not difficult to stir-fry as long as you make the sauce well and prepare the vegetables and sundae.

- 1/2 Cabbage (adds sweetness and crunch)
- 1/2 Carrot (for color and sweetness)
- 1 bunch Perilla Leaves (for a fragrant aroma, add at the end)

- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- A pinch of Black Pepper
- Sesame Seeds
- Ground Perilla Seeds (add for extra nuttiness, optional)
- 1 Tbsp Gochujang (Korean chili paste)
- 2 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes, adjust for spiciness)
- 2 Tbsp Jin Ganjang (Korean soy sauce)
- 1/2 Tbsp Sugar (adjust sweetness)
- 1 Tbsp Oligosaccharide (for gloss and sweetness)
- 1 Tbsp Maesil Extract (Korean plum extract, for umami)
- 1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Sesame Oil
- A pinch of Black Pepper
- Sesame Seeds
- Ground Perilla Seeds (add for extra nuttiness, optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the sundae into bite-sized pieces, about one mouthful each. (This recipe makes about 2 servings, 500g is a generous amount.)
Step 2
Wash the onion, cabbage, carrot, and green onion under running water. Then, slice them into strips, either similar in size to the sundae or slightly larger. Roll the perilla leaves and slice them thinly; these will be added at the end for a fresh, aromatic touch.
Step 3
In a bowl, combine 1 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp gochugaru, 2 Tbsp jin ganjang, 1/2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp oligosaccharide, 1 Tbsp maesil extract, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp sesame oil, a pinch of black pepper, sesame seeds, and ground perilla seeds (if using). Mix these ingredients thoroughly to create the sauce. Making the sauce in advance helps to speed up the cooking process.
Step 4
Heat a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat and add a little cooking oil. Add the prepared vegetables (onion, cabbage, carrot, green onion) and stir-fry them quickly. The key here is to cook them just enough so they remain slightly crisp and don’t become too soggy. Stir-fry for about 1-2 minutes.
Step 5
Once the vegetables are slightly softened, add the cut sundae to the pan. Stir continuously and vigorously over high heat for about 2-3 minutes, allowing the sundae to heat through and absorb the flavors.
Step 6
Now, pour the prepared sauce over the sundae and vegetables, ensuring it’s evenly distributed. Reduce the heat to medium-low to prevent the sauce from burning. Stir quickly to coat all the ingredients with the sauce. This is also a good time to add the thinly sliced perilla leaves and stir-fry them briefly for added fragrance.
Step 7
Your delicious Sundae Stir-fry is ready, glistening with a rich sauce and packed with fresh vegetables! It’s perfect to enjoy with a warm bowl of rice or as a delightful accompaniment to a cold beer or soju. Enjoy your meal!
