Main Ingredients

  • 2-3 squid (cleaned and prepared)
  • 1 onion (medium-sized)
  • 1/4 head of cabbage
  • 1 stalk of green onion
  • 2 Korean chili peppers (adjust to your spice preference)

Spicy & Sweet Secret Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
  • 6 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp gochujang (Korean chili paste)
  • 2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Finishing Touches (For Extra Flavor!)

  • 1 Tbsp gochugaru (for color and extra spice)
  • 1 Tbsp sugar (for sweetness and gloss)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, thoroughly clean the squid and cut it into bite-sized pieces. Slice the onion and chop the cabbage into similar sizes. Slice the green onion diagonally and finely chop the Korean chili peppers to add a spicy kick.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat 2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the green onions and sauté until fragrant and lightly browned to create scallion oil. Once the scallions are fragrant, add the prepared squid and stir-fry quickly over high heat until just cooked. Be careful not to overcook the squid, as it can become tough.

Step 2

Step 3

When the squid is halfway cooked, add the prepared onion, cabbage, and Korean chili peppers to the pan. Stir-fry together. Now, add all the ‘Spicy & Sweet Secret Sauce’ ingredients (3 Tbsp gochugaru, 6 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp gochujang, 2 Tbsp sugar) and continue to stir-fry just until the vegetables are slightly wilted. Remember, the squid is already cooked, so avoid prolonged cooking.

Step 3

Step 4

Finally, add the ‘Finishing Touches’ ingredients: 1 Tbsp gochugaru and 1 Tbsp sugar. This step enhances the appetizing color of the dish, balances the overall flavors, and boosts the umami. Stir-fry briefly to combine everything well.

Step 4

Step 5

Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 teaspoon of sesame oil for a nutty aroma. Separately, boil some bean sprouts until tender and then chill them in cold water. The cool, crunchy bean sprouts complement the spicy stir-fried squid beautifully, cutting through the richness and making the dish even more enjoyable.
