Spicy and Sweet Stir-Fried Squid (Ojinguh Bokkeum)
Quick and Delicious Stir-Fried Squid – A Perfect Side Dish!
When the weather turns chilly, a craving for something spicy often strikes. I found some pre-prepped squid in my freezer, thawed it quickly, and whipped up this delicious stir-fried squid. It’s a dish that’s as satisfying as it is easy to make.
Main Ingredients- 2 squid, cleaned and prepared
- 1 onion
- 1/2 carrot
- 1-2 hot peppers (like Korean Cheongyang peppers or red chilies), to taste
- 1 white part of green onion
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, chop the white part of the green onion into large pieces. Heat 3 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped green onion and stir-fry to release its fragrant oil, creating a flavorful base for the dish.
Step 2
Once the green onion is fragrant, add the 2 prepared squid. Stir in 1 tablespoon of sugar and 1 tablespoon of minced garlic. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the squid turns opaque white. Ensure the ingredients are well combined.
Step 3
When the squid is mostly cooked and has turned white, it’s time to add the sauce ingredients. Stir in 1 tablespoon of gochujang, 5 tablespoons of soy sauce, and 2 tablespoons of gochugaru. Mix well with the squid and cook. Tip: Since vegetables will be added, the sauce might dilute slightly, so it’s best to make the seasoning a bit stronger at this stage.
Step 4
To prevent the sauce from sticking to the pan and to add moisture, pour in 1/2 cup (about 100ml) of water. Let it simmer briefly until the sauce thickens slightly.
Step 5
Thickly slice the onion. Slice the carrot diagonally. If you like it spicier, thinly slice the hot peppers diagonally as well. Add all the prepared vegetables to the pan and stir-fry until they are well coated with the sauce.
Step 6
As soon as the onion starts to turn translucent, you’re almost done. Just before turning off the heat, drizzle in 1 tablespoon of sesame oil and gently toss everything together. Your delicious stir-fried squid is ready! Feel free to adjust the seasoning to your liking with a pinch of salt, extra sugar, or more chili flakes if needed. Remember, the taste of gochujang and soy sauce can vary between brands.
Step 7
Enjoy the wonderfully tender squid combined with the perfectly balanced spicy, sweet, and savory sauce. It’s a truly delightful dish!
Step 8
Why not make this flavorful stir-fried squid today to chase away the cold? It’s a fantastic dish for sharing with loved ones. (This recipe was inspired by Baek Jong-won’s stir-fried squid recipe.)
