Main Ingredients

  • 1 octopus tentacle (pre-cooked)
  • 5cm piece of carrot
  • 1/2 stalk of green onion
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 serving of rice

Sauce Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 2 Tbsp cooking wine (mirin or similar)
  • 1/2 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp sesame seeds

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

We’ll start with one octopus tentacle. Since the tentacles can be quite large, one can be enough for a generous single serving or even two smaller servings. If you don’t have octopus, squid or baby octopus would also work wonderfully in this dish.

Step 1

Step 2

Slice the octopus tentacle as thinly as possible. Thin slices are key to achieving a tender yet delightfully chewy texture. This ensures you get the best of both worlds – a satisfying bite and a smooth feel.

Step 2

Step 3

Prepare your vegetables. Cut the 5cm carrot into julienne strips. Slice the green onion and onion into bite-sized pieces, about 2-3 cm long. Thinly slice the red chili pepper diagonally to add a pop of color and a hint of heat. Feel free to add other vegetables you have on hand!

Step 3

Step 4

Now, let’s make the flavorful sauce that brings this dish together. In a bowl, combine the gochugaru, soy sauce, oyster sauce, cooking wine, sugar, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. Stir everything together until well combined. This sauce is the heart of our spicy and savory stir-fry.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat a bit of cooking oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add the prepared vegetables (carrot, green onion, onion) to the pan. Season them with a pinch of salt and pepper, then stir-fry quickly until they start to soften slightly. We want the vegetables to retain a bit of their crunch.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the vegetables begin to wilt, add the minced garlic and sauté for about a minute until fragrant. Now, add the thinly sliced octopus and the prepared sauce to the pan. Toss everything together gently but quickly, ensuring the octopus and vegetables are evenly coated with the delicious sauce. Be careful not to overcook the octopus, as it can become tough.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, add the sliced red chili peppers to the pan. Continue to stir-fry for just another 30 seconds to a minute, until the sauce thickens slightly and coats everything beautifully. This final step brings all the flavors together.

Step 7

Step 8

Serve the vibrant stir-fried octopus over a bowl of warm rice for a truly satisfying ‘Spicy and Sweet Stir-Fried Octopus Rice Bowl’. The tender octopus, the zesty sauce, and the fluffy rice create an incredibly delicious combination. The thinly sliced octopus offers a delightful texture that’s both chewy and tender. Enjoy this hearty and flavorful meal that’s sure to become a favorite!
