Super Simple Spicy Stir-Fried Fish Cakes Recipe
The perfect side dish to have in your fridge! Introducing the ultimate odeng bokkeum, featuring a savory and slightly sweet sauce that perfectly coats the fish cakes. This dish is loved by everyone, young and old. It’s ready in just 5 minutes, making it a stress-free option even for busy mornings.
Main Ingredients- 5 sheets of square fish cakes (Odeng)
- 4 Korean chili peppers (adjust to your spice preference)
- 1/2 medium onion
Seasoning- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2/3 Tbsp sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of sesame seeds
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce
- 2/3 Tbsp sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
- 1 Tbsp cooking oil
- 1 Tbsp sesame oil
- A pinch of sesame seeds
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, in a frying pan, combine 1 Tbsp of cooking oil, 3 Tbsp of soy sauce, and 2/3 Tbsp of sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved to create the sauce base. It’s important to stir well to prevent the sugar from clumping.
Step 2
Thinly slice the onion and finely chop the Korean chili peppers. (If you prefer less spice, you can use regular chili peppers or remove the seeds). Add the prepared onion and chili peppers to the sauce base and stir-fry over medium heat until the onion becomes translucent and fragrant.
Step 3
Once the onion is sufficiently softened, thinly slice the square fish cakes (about 0.5cm thick) and add them to the pan. Continue to stir-fry, ensuring the fish cakes are well coated with the sauce. The fish cakes will absorb the sauce and deepen in color.
Step 4
When the fish cakes are tender and the sauce is evenly distributed, drizzle in 1 Tbsp of sesame oil and turn off the heat. The nutty aroma of the sesame oil will enhance the overall flavor of the dish.
Step 5
Transfer the finished spicy and sweet stir-fried fish cakes to a serving plate and sprinkle with a pinch of sesame seeds. Your delicious and visually appealing odeng bokkeum is ready! It’s perfect served over warm rice or as a side dish for a lunchbox.
