Main Ingredients

  • 4 sheets of square fish cakes (eomuk)
  • 6 Vienna sausages (optional)
  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1/4 medium carrot
  • 1/3 stalk of green onion

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, let’s prepare the fish cakes. Cut each square fish cake into two lengthwise, then slice them into strips about 1cm thick. Thinly slice the onion. Cut the carrot into thin, flat pieces, similar to the fish cakes. If using Vienna sausages, make a few shallow cuts on them to help them absorb the sauce better. Chop the green onion.

Step 1

Step 2

Heat a little oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant. Once the garlic aroma is released, add the prepared fish cakes, onion, carrot, and Vienna sausages to the pan and stir-fry them together.

Step 2

Step 3

Now, let’s add the seasonings. Pour in 3 tablespoons of soy sauce and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir well to combine with the ingredients and continue stir-frying. You can use either regular soy sauce (jin ganjang) or brewed soy sauce (yangjo ganjang). Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar and soy sauce to your preference.

Step 3

Step 4

If you prefer a spicier kick, add 1 tablespoon of red chili flakes (gochugaru) and stir-fry. Alternatively, you can finely chop some Korean green chili peppers (cheongyang peppers) instead of gochugaru for a fresh, spicy flavor. If you’re making this for children or prefer a milder dish, you can skip this step.

Step 4

Step 5

(Baek Jong-Won’s original recipe doesn’t include red chili flakes, but I’ve added 1 tablespoon to make it spicier. Adjust this according to your taste!)

Step 5

Step 6

Once everything is well stir-fried, turn off the heat. Finally, add the chopped green onions, toasted sesame seeds, and 1 tablespoon of sesame oil for extra flavor and aroma.

Step 6

Step 7

Gently toss everything together to ensure the sesame oil and seeds are evenly distributed. Transfer to a serving plate, and your delicious spicy and sweet stir-fried fish cakes are ready to enjoy!
