Spicy and Sweet Seasoned Roasted Gim (Korean Seaweed)
Make a Delicious Side Dish with Aromatic Roasted Gim
Ingredients- 10 sheets of traditional Gim (Laver)
- 3 Tbsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean Chili Flakes)
- 0.5 Tbsp Minced Garlic
- 1 Tbsp Oligodang (Corn Syrup/Sweetener)
- 2 Tbsp Perilla Oil
- 2 Tbsp Toasted Sesame Seeds
- 5 stalks of Chives
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Instead of using a grill rack on a gas stove, I’ve considered how to roast Gim on an electric stove. Although it takes a bit more effort, I’ll carefully roast each sheet in a frying pan. This method helps preserve the Gim’s distinct nutty aroma.
Step 2
Once the Gim is roasted, place it in a plastic bag and crumble it into small pieces. To prevent Gim flakes from scattering everywhere, gently crush it inside the bag. This way, you can create perfectly crumbled Gim without making a mess.
Step 3
Prepare the seasoning: mix 3 Tbsp of soy sauce, 1 Tbsp of gochugaru, 0.5 Tbsp of minced garlic, 1 Tbsp of oligodang, 2 Tbsp of perilla oil, and 2 Tbsp of toasted sesame seeds. Traditionally, chopped green onions are used, but since I only had large green onions at home and wanted to use up some chives, I finely chopped 5 stalks of chives instead. The fresh aroma of chives will beautifully complement the Gim.
Step 4
Pour the prepared, flavorful seasoning mixture evenly over the crumbled roasted Gim.
Step 5
Now, gently mix the Gim with your hands to ensure the seasoning is well distributed. As you mix, the Gim might clump together, so gently break apart any clumps to coat everything evenly with the seasoning. This ‘jomul-jomul’ (massaging) motion is key!
Step 6
And there you have it – delicious seasoned roasted Gim! If you have some Gim that has lost its crispness, don’t throw it away. Try this recipe to transform it into a fragrant and tasty side dish. It’s perfect for boosting your appetite, especially on days when you don’t feel like eating much.
