  • 1/2 medium onion
  • 1/2 green onion

Seasoning & Other Ingredients

  • 1/2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 Tbsp perilla oil (deulgireum)
  • 100ml water
  • 4 Tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 Tbsp red pepper flakes (gochugaru)
  • 1/2 Tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 Tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, it’s important to drain the tofu effectively. Place one block of tofu on a colander and let it drain naturally for about 10-15 minutes. You can also gently press it with paper towels.

Step 1

Step 2

Thinly slice the onion and finely chop the green onion. Preparing the vegetables in advance will make the cooking process much smoother.

Step 2

Step 3

The key to delicious braised tofu is the sauce! In a bowl, combine 4 Tbsp soy sauce, 2 Tbsp red pepper flakes, 1/2 Tbsp oyster sauce, 1 Tbsp minced garlic, 1 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp sesame seeds, and 1 Tbsp sesame oil. Mix well to create the flavorful sauce.

Step 3

Step 4

Cut the drained tofu into bite-sized pieces, about 1.5-2cm thick. Cutting them too thin can cause them to break apart easily, so aim for a moderate thickness.

Step 4

Step 5

Now, it’s time to pan-fry the tofu until golden brown. Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat, add 1/2 Tbsp cooking oil and 1 Tbsp perilla oil. Place the tofu pieces in the pan. Pan-fry each side for about 1 minute until golden brown and slightly firm. This step helps the tofu hold its shape better during braising and enhances its flavor.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the tofu is nicely browned, add the sliced onions and the prepared sauce mixture to the pan. Pour in 100ml of water and simmer over medium-low heat for 5 minutes, allowing the sauce to penetrate the tofu.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, cover the pan with a lid and simmer on low heat for another 1 minute. This allows the flavors to meld further, making the dish even richer. Covering the pan helps the tofu cook through and become tender.

Step 7

Step 8

Voila! Your incredibly simple yet delicious braised tofu is ready! Serve it over warm rice and enjoy. ^^
