Potatoes are always a winner! Today, I’ve prepared ‘Spicy and Sweet Braised Potatoes,’ made with plenty of gochugaru (Korean chili powder) for a perfect spicy yet sweet flavor. It’s a true rice thief! Create a delightful meal with these simple ingredients!
Main Ingredients- 4 medium potatoes
- 1 Tbsp scallions, finely chopped
- Grapeseed oil or cooking oil (for frying potatoes)
Spicy and Sweet Sauce- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp water
- 1 Tbsp cheongju (rice wine) or cooking wine
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp perilla oil (or sesame oil)
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- Pinch of black pepper
- 1 Tbsp soy sauce
- 1 Tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili powder)
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp water
- 1 Tbsp cheongju (rice wine) or cooking wine
- 1/2 Tbsp minced garlic
- 2 Tbsp perilla oil (or sesame oil)
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- Pinch of black pepper
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, peel the 4 potatoes and slice them thinly into half-moons or bite-sized pieces. Soaking them in water briefly to remove excess starch and then draining them will help.

Heat a generous amount of grapeseed oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the sliced potatoes and fry until they are golden brown and slightly glossy. Flip them occasionally.

While the potatoes are frying, combine 1 Tbsp soy sauce in a deep bowl.

Add 1 Tbsp oyster sauce for an extra boost of umami.
