How to Make a Delicious Side Dish: Spicy and Sweet Braised Fish Cakes
Braised fish cakes are a beloved side dish for both kids and adults alike! Today, we’re sharing a recipe for spicy braised fish cakes with a touch of chili powder, adding a wonderful depth of flavor.
Main Ingredients- 6 sheets of square fish cakes (eomuk)
- 1 onion
- 1 stalk of green onion
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces, approximately 3cm x 5cm (about 14 portions per sheet). Thinly slice the onion into strips. Slice the green onion diagonally. Mince the garlic finely.
Step 2
Heat 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan over medium-low heat. Add the minced garlic and stir-fry until fragrant, being careful not to burn it. Once the garlic aroma fills the air, proceed to the next step.
Step 3
Add the prepared fish cakes to the fragrant garlic oil and stir-fry over medium heat for 2-3 minutes. Coating the fish cakes in oil will make them softer and chewier.
Step 4
Once the fish cakes are somewhat stir-fried, add the sliced onions and diagonally cut green onions. Stir-fry them together briefly. It’s best to maintain a slight crunch in the onions and green onions, so stir-fry for just 1-2 minutes until they are slightly softened. Overcooking can make them mushy and affect the taste.
Step 5
Now it’s time for the delicious seasoning. First, add the soy sauce to the pan. Slightly searing the soy sauce can enhance its deep flavor. Next, add the mirin and sugar (or corn syrup), stirring well to combine all ingredients. Finally, add the gochugaru for a touch of spiciness and continue to stir-fry for about 1 minute until the seasoning coats the fish cakes evenly.
Step 6
Your delicious spicy and sweet braised fish cakes are ready! They are perfect served over warm rice or packed as a side dish in a lunchbox. Enjoy your meal!
