Main Ingredients- 6 sheets of square fish cakes (you can also use wide fish cakes if you prefer)
- 1/2 onion (adds sweetness and depth of flavor)
- 2 Korean green chili peppers (add more if you like it spicier)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced (greatly enhances the aroma)
- A small amount of green onion (for color and fragrance)
- A little sesame oil (for a nutty finish)
- A little cooking oil (for stir-frying)
- A little sesame seeds (for a nutty taste and garnish)
Spicy and Sweet Sauce- 3 Tbsp soy sauce (for basic seasoning)
- 2 Tbsp corn syrup or oligosaccharide (for shine and sweetness)
- A little sugar (to adjust sweetness)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes – the key to spiciness!)
- 3 Tbsp soy sauce (for basic seasoning)
- 2 Tbsp corn syrup or oligosaccharide (for shine and sweetness)
- A little sugar (to adjust sweetness)
- 1 Tbsp gochugaru (Korean chili flakes – the key to spiciness!)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, cut the fish cakes into bite-sized pieces (about 1.5 cm wide). Slice the onion thinly into strips, and diagonally slice the green chilies and green onion. Mince the garlic finely, as this helps the sauce penetrate better.
Step 2
Heat a pan with a little cooking oil. Add the soy sauce, corn syrup, and a little sugar (optional, depending on your preference). Bring this sauce mixture to a gentle simmer first; this will significantly enhance the flavor of the sauce.
Step 3
Once the sauce is simmering, add the sliced onion, diagonally sliced green chilies, and minced garlic. Stir-fry until the vegetables are slightly softened. The onions will release their sweetness, making the dish even more delicious. When the vegetables are somewhat cooked, add the cut fish cakes and continue to stir-fry.
Step 4
Stir-fry the fish cakes and vegetables until they are evenly coated with the sauce and beginning to absorb the flavors. When they are tender and the sauce is well incorporated, add the gochugaru (Korean chili flakes). Stir-fry over medium heat rather than high heat to prevent burning and achieve a beautiful color.
Step 5
Once the fish cakes and vegetables are nicely stir-fried and coated with the sauce, drizzle in a little sesame oil. The nutty aroma of sesame oil will further enrich the flavor of the dish. Turn off the heat and stir gently one more time.
Step 6
When the dish is ready, sprinkle with sesame seeds for a visually appealing garnish and added nutty flavor. This makes the dish look much more appetizing.
Step 7
Transfer the deliciously stir-fried spicy fish cakes to a serving plate. It’s incredibly delicious served with warm rice! Enjoy this flavorful dish, garnished with sesame seeds to your liking.
