Gimbap Filling Ingredients- 4 sheets of Gimbap seaweed (nori)
- 2 bowls of cooked rice
- 2 Tbsp sesame oil
- 1 Tbsp toasted sesame seeds
- 2 Korean green chilies (cheongyang peppers)
- 1 handful of lettuce
- A pinch of sea salt (to taste)
- 1 bell pepper (any color)
- 4 large scallions
- 4 eggs
- 4 strips of bacon
- 4 pieces of pickled radish (danmuji)
- Plenty of perilla leaves (kkaennip)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the filling ingredients that will add flavor to your gimbap. Wash the fresh lettuce thoroughly, pat it dry, and then finely mince it. Finely chop the Korean green chilies to add a spicy kick (adjust the amount according to your preference). Adding lettuce provides a crisp texture and a healthy feel. If you don’t have lettuce, other leafy greens can be substituted.
Step 2
To the 2 bowls of warm cooked rice, add 2 tablespoons of fragrant sesame oil, 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds for nutty flavor, and a pinch of sea salt to enhance the savory taste. (Adjust the saltiness to your liking.) Add the minced lettuce and green chilies, and mix everything thoroughly to season the rice.
Step 3
Cut the bell pepper into long, thin strips about 0.5 cm thick. For today’s star ingredient, the scallion, cut them into large, long pieces. We’ll be adding them whole into the gimbap for a rich flavor!
Step 4
Crack the 4 eggs into a bowl and beat them well. Lightly grease a pan and cook the eggs thinly until golden brown on both sides, creating egg crepes. Once cooled, cut the egg crepes into convenient sizes or shapes for the gimbap filling.
Step 5
Place the large cut scallions in a pan heated over medium heat and grill them on both sides until lightly golden. Grill them just enough to bring out their sweetness. Be careful not to overcook them, as they can become mushy.
Step 6
Delicious bacon is another important ingredient that adds flavor to the gimbap. Place the bacon in a pan and cook until crispy on both sides. Drain excess fat before setting aside.
Step 7
Spread the seasoned rice onto a sheet of gimbap seaweed. It’s important to spread the rice thinly, covering only about 2/3 of the seaweed. Don’t use too much rice, as it can cause the gimbap to break when rolled. Use a moderate amount.
Step 8
Place a perilla leaf on top of the rice. The unique aroma of the perilla leaf enhances the overall flavor of the gimbap. Next, arrange the prepared egg crepe, long strips of pickled radish, and crisp bell pepper attractively on top.
Step 9
Arrange the golden-brown cooked bacon neatly over the egg and vegetables. The savory saltiness of the bacon will further elevate the taste of the gimbap.
Step 10
Now, add the star of today’s dish: the grilled scallions, generously on top of the bacon. The mildly pungent yet sweet flavor of the scallions will envelop the entire gimbap, delivering a fantastic taste. Doesn’t it just make your mouth water?
Step 11
Once all the fillings are in place, roll the gimbap tightly. Start by rolling from the perilla leaf side to enclose the ingredients, shaping the gimbap into a cylinder. Rolling the gimbap tightly is crucial to prevent the fillings from falling out and maintain a neat shape.
Step 12
Carefully roll all the way to the end of the seaweed. Gently press the edge to seal it, ensuring a securely rolled gimbap.
Step 13
Voila! DuriMoon’s special recipe, the spicy, savory, and crisp Scallion Gimbap, is complete! Create a special meal with these carefully made gimbap rolls.
