Super Simple Mentaiko Steamed Dish: The Ultimate Rice Thief Recipe
I recently tried the Mentaiko Steamed Dish recipe shared by one of my favorite influencers, Chomi, and it turned out to be an absolute rice thief! It’s so incredibly delicious that I had to share it with you all! Plus, one batch can last for about 5 to 10 meals, which is fantastic, right?
Main Ingredients- Mentaiko (Spicy cod roe) 180g
Seasoning Ingredients- Cheongyang pepper 1
- Scallion (julienned) 1 Tbsp
- Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 1 Tbsp
- Minced garlic 1 Tbsp
- Sesame oil 10 Tbsp
- Toasted sesame seeds (generous amount)
- Cheongyang pepper 1
- Scallion (julienned) 1 Tbsp
- Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes) 1 Tbsp
- Minced garlic 1 Tbsp
- Sesame oil 10 Tbsp
- Toasted sesame seeds (generous amount)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, in a bowl, finely chop the 180g of Mentaiko. Use a chopstick or spatula to break it down into bite-sized pieces without any large clumps. The key is to gently break apart the roe.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, add 1 Tbsp of minced garlic. Then, finely mince 1 Tbsp of julienned scallions and 1 Cheongyang pepper, and add them to the bowl. If you prefer a smoother texture, using an immersion blender to process all these ingredients together is highly recommended. This will help the seasonings blend more evenly with the Mentaiko.
Step 3
Now, add 10 Tbsp of sesame oil for aroma, 1 Tbsp of gochugaru for a spicy kick, and a generous amount of toasted sesame seeds for nutty flavor. Mix all the seasoning ingredients thoroughly with the chopped Mentaiko until well combined. Your delicious Mentaiko steamed dish seasoning is now ready!
Step 4
Prepare a steamer by adding water and bringing it to a boil. Once steaming, place the seasoned Mentaiko into the steamer and cook over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes. It’s a good idea to open the steamer briefly halfway through the cooking time and give it a gentle stir. This ensures the seasoning is evenly distributed and enhances the flavor. (If using a microwave, be sure to cover it tightly with plastic wrap and microwave for about 4 minutes. Remember to take it out halfway and stir it well!)
Step 5
Serve this delightful Mentaiko Steamed Dish over warm rice and mix it in – it’s incredibly tasty! Any leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator and enjoyed as a delicious side dish for a few days.
