Main Ingredients

  • Canned Chili Tuna 200g (1 can)
  • Potatoes 2 medium
  • Onion 1/2 medium
  • Green Onions 2 stalks
  • Glass Noodles 1 handful (approx. 30g)

Liquid Base

  • Water 400ml (approx. 2 cups)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Begin by soaking the glass noodles in cold water for at least 30 minutes. If you’re short on time, you can boil them separately in water until cooked and then use them. Prepare your vegetables: 2 medium potatoes, 1/2 an onion, and 2 stalks of green onion. You’ll be using two 200g cans of chili tuna (total 400g).

Step 1

Step 2

Wash the potatoes and onion, then peel them. Cut them into bite-sized pieces. Try to cut the potatoes into slightly thicker pieces so they don’t break down too much while cooking.

Step 2

Step 3

Place the chopped potatoes and onions into a pot. Add about 400ml of water. This amount should be enough to mostly cover the vegetables.

Step 3

Step 4

Now, place the pot on the stove and add both cans of chili tuna, including the oil and sauce from the cans. The chili tuna’s seasoning will add a wonderful depth of flavor to the stew.

Step 4

Step 5

Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium and let it simmer until the potatoes are tender and the liquid has reduced to a thick, stew-like consistency. Stir occasionally to ensure even cooking.

Step 5

Step 6

Once the potatoes are cooked and the liquid has thickened slightly, add the pre-soaked glass noodles. **Tip:** If you add uncooked glass noodles directly, they will absorb a lot of the broth, potentially leaving your jjageuli too dry. It’s best to use pre-soaked or pre-cooked noodles.

Step 6

Step 7

Finally, chop the green onions into about 5cm lengths and add them to the pot. Let it simmer for another minute or two. Taste the stew and if it needs more flavor, add 1/2 Tbsp of red pepper flakes and 1/2 to 1 Tbsp of soy sauce or fish sauce. Adjust the seasoning to your preference for an extra savory kick.

Step 7

Step 8

Once the green onions are slightly softened and the stew has a nice, rich consistency, your Spicy Chili Tuna Jjageuli is ready to enjoy! It’s delicious served over a bowl of hot rice or as a perfect accompaniment to a drink.
