Spam Musubi: Simple and Delicious Square Sushi Rolls for the Whole Family
How to Make Spam Musubi: A Square Sushi Roll Everyone Will Love
Do you have leftover Spam from holiday gifts? Here’s a simple Spam Musubi recipe using Spam and eggs. You can easily shape it using a Spam can, making it a quick and tasty treat for the entire family!
Main Ingredients
- 2 slices Spam
- 3 eggs
- 1 bowl warm cooked rice
- 1-2 sheets of sushi nori (seaweed)
- 4 slices zucchini (optional)
Rice Seasoning
- Salt
- Pinch of pepper
- 1 swirl of sesame oil (approx. 1/2 Tbsp)
- Salt
- Pinch of pepper
- 1 swirl of sesame oil (approx. 1/2 Tbsp)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
Whisk the 3 eggs in a bowl. Since Spam is salty, it’s best not to add extra salt to the eggs. Heat a frying pan and cook thinly like an omelet or make a thick egg roll. Once cooked, cut it into bite-sized pieces.
Step 2
To the bowl of warm rice, add a pinch of salt and pepper. Drizzle in the sesame oil and gently mix with a spatula, ensuring the rice grains don’t get mashed. This seasons the rice evenly.
Step 3
Take the Spam out of the can and slice it to about 1 cm thickness. Aim for a thickness similar to your egg slices for a neat appearance. Pan-fry the Spam slices until golden brown on both sides. This enhances their flavor.
Step 4
While Spam and egg alone are delicious, consider adding zucchini for a touch of color. Slice the zucchini thinly, similar in shape to the Spam slices. You could also use lettuce or perilla leaves if you have them.
Step 5
Cut the fried Spam and prepared egg slices (or egg roll) to fit the size of the Spam can. **Important Tip: Hot ingredients can make the nori soggy. Let the ingredients cool slightly before rolling to prevent this.**
Step 6
Use the empty Spam can as a mold. Line the can with plastic wrap or a plastic bag. Now, it’s time to layer! Start with a thin layer of rice at the bottom, followed by the zucchini slices (if using), then the pan-fried Spam, and finally the egg. Top with another layer of rice and press down firmly.
Step 7
Press down on the top layer of rice inside the Spam can to compact the ingredients and shape it nicely. Carefully lift the wrapped musubi out of the can using the plastic wrap or bag. You should have a neat rectangular shape.
Step 8
Remove the plastic wrap or bag from the musubi. Place it on a sheet of sushi nori. Wrap the nori around the musubi to form a neat rectangle. You can slightly moisten the edge of the nori to help it seal, or lightly toast it. Using a whole sheet of nori will make a larger musubi; cutting it in half will result in a more standard size.
Step 9
Slice the wrapped Spam musubi. To prevent it from falling apart, cut it into slightly thicker pieces, about 1.5 to 2 cm wide. Wiping your knife with a damp cloth or paper towel between cuts will help you get clean slices.
Step 10
Your delicious Spam Musubi is ready! This recipe yields about 5 pieces (don’t worry if one isn’t perfect!). The combination of salty Spam, soft egg, and savory rice is always a hit. It’s quite filling, so just one or two make a satisfying snack or lunch. They’re also perfect for picnic lunches! Enjoy making and eating them!
