  • 4 servings of cooked rice, warm
  • 1 can of Spam (classic size)
  • 5 sheets of kimbap seaweed

Rice Seasoning

  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds (ground)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

First, prepare the can of Spam and slice it into thick pieces, about 1cm thick. Slicing them too thinly might cause the shape to fall apart.

Heat a pan over medium-low heat, then place the sliced Spam in the pan. Grill until both sides are golden brown and slightly crispy. This enhances the Spam’s flavor and makes it more delicious.

In a bowl, place 4 servings of warm cooked rice. Add 2 tsp of salt, 1 Tbsp of sesame oil, and 1 tsp of toasted sesame seeds. Gently mix with a spatula, being careful not to mash the rice grains, ensuring the seasoning is evenly distributed.

Place the well-grilled Spam slices on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil. This step helps to ensure the kimbap isn’t greasy and turns out neat.

Prepare 5 sheets of kimbap seaweed. Cut each sheet in half lengthwise. This is for creating the small heart shapes.

Spread a thin layer of seasoned rice on one side of a halved seaweed sheet. Then, place one piece of grilled Spam at the bottom. For the heart shape, place one Spam slice normally, and then place another Spam slice flipped on top of the first one, so they meet in the middle to form the top curves of the heart. Gently take a small amount of rice and spread it over the top exposed part of the Spam to help secure the heart shape.

Now, prepare the kimbap seaweed. Place one of the halved seaweed sheets on a kimbap mat or your palm. Spread a thin, even layer of seasoned rice over it. Leave a small margin at the top edge of the seaweed to help seal the roll.

Carefully place the prepared Spam heart shape in the center of the rice-covered seaweed. Starting from the bottom edge, roll the kimbap tightly, ensuring the rice and Spam heart shape stay intact.
