Spam and Tofu Sandwich: An Easy and Flavorful Tofu Recipe
You bought tofu and don’t feel like braising or pan-frying it, but you still need to cook it? I wanted something a bit different. So, I made Spam and Tofu Sandwiches using the ingredients I had on hand.
Ingredients- 1 block of tofu
- 1/2 large can of Spam (or 1 small can)
- 2 eggs
- All-purpose flour (for coating)
- Cooking oil (generous amount)
- Pinch of salt
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare your ingredients. I used one block of tofu and about half of a large can of Spam. If you have a small can, one should suffice. It’s a good idea to blanch the Spam in hot water or at least rinse it with hot water to remove some of the excess grease, which makes it taste even better. (Optional, but recommended!)
Step 2
Now, let’s prepare the batter. Crack two eggs into a bowl and whisk them together with a tiny pinch of salt for seasoning. Have about 3-4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour ready. (You might need to adjust the amount of flour and eggs depending on the size of your tofu and Spam.)
Step 3
It’s time to assemble the sandwiches! Slice the tofu into approximately 1cm thick pieces. Place slices of the prepped Spam (cut to fit the tofu) on top of half the tofu slices, then cover with the remaining tofu slices to create sandwich shapes, much like mini tofu burgers!
Step 4
Next, we’ll coat the sandwiches. Lightly dust the assembled tofu-Spam-tofu sandwiches with flour on all sides. This flour coating acts as a ‘glue’ to help the egg batter adhere better and contributes to a crispier finish when fried.
Step 5
Carefully dip each floured sandwich into the beaten egg mixture, ensuring it’s fully coated. To prevent the sandwiches from falling apart, it’s easier and cleaner to wear disposable gloves while dipping and coating them in the egg wash, rather than using chopsticks or tongs.
Step 6
Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Gently place the egg-coated sandwiches into the hot oil, making sure to leave enough space between them so they don’t stick together while cooking.
Step 7
Fry each of the six sides of the sandwiches until they are golden brown and crisp. This usually takes about 2-3 minutes per side. Cooking them over medium-low heat and turning them gently will ensure they are cooked through and have a delightfully crispy exterior. Your Spam and Tofu Sandwiches are ready!
