  • Occasion : Quick & Easy
  • Cooking : Stir-fry
  • Servings : 2 servings
  • Cooking Time : Within 60 minutes
  • Difficulty : Anyone

Ingredients

  • 1/4 carrot (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 onion (finely chopped)
  • 1/4 potato (finely chopped)
  • 15cm green onion (chopped)
  • 1 handful shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 2 Tbsp cooking oil
  • 200ml water (150ml for sauce, 50ml for rinsing)
  • 4 Tbsp jjajang powder (adjust according to product instructions)
  • 0.7 Tbsp sugar (sweetness adjustable)
  • 1/3 Tbsp soy sauce (for umami)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Set aside 50ml of the 200ml water you’ll use for the sauce. This will be used later to rinse the jjajang bowl for no waste.

Step 1

Step 2

In a large bowl, combine 4 Tbsp jjajang powder, 0.7 Tbsp sugar, 1/3 Tbsp soy sauce, and 150ml of the reserved water. Whisk well with a whisk or spoon until smooth and no clumps remain, creating your jjajang sauce. If it seems too thick, you can add a tiny bit more water.

Step 2

Step 3

Finely chop the carrot, onion, and potato into bite-sized pieces or smaller, excluding the shrimp and green onion. Using a food processor or a knife, mince them finely so that children will eat the vegetables more readily.

Step 3

Step 4

Cut the prepared shrimp into bite-sized pieces. Chop the green onion. If your child dislikes shrimp, you can omit them or substitute with other seafood.

Step 4

Step 5

Heat 2 Tbsp of cooking oil in a pan over medium heat. Add all the prepared ingredients (minced vegetables, chopped shrimp, chopped green onion) and stir-fry for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are slightly softened and fragrant.

Step 5

Step 6

Pour the pre-made jjajang sauce over the stir-fried ingredients. To ensure no sauce is left behind in the bowl, add the reserved 50ml of water to the bowl, swirl it around to rinse, and then pour it into the pan. This way, you can use every last drop of the sauce.

Step 6

Step 7

Continue to cook over medium heat for about 1 more minute, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and coats the ingredients evenly. Jjajang sauce can thicken quickly, so avoid overcooking to prevent burning. It’s ready when it becomes glossy and slightly thick.

Step 7

Step 8

Serve the hot rice in a bowl, then generously ladle the delicious jjajang mixture on top. For an extra special touch that kids will love, sprinkle with parsley flakes or serve with a boiled egg. This is a magical one-bowl meal they’ll finish in no time! Enjoy your tasty jjajang rice!
