Main Ingredients

  • 300g Rice cake soup rice cakes (rinsed in water)
  • 1/2 stalk Green onion (cut into large pieces)
  • 1 Korean chili pepper (seeds removed and finely chopped)
  • 3 sheets Fish cakes (cut into bite-sized pieces)
  • 1/2 Onion (sliced)
  • Approx. 100g Spam or similar processed meat (cut into cubes or desired pieces)

Tteokbokki Sauce

  • 3 Tbsp Soy sauce
  • 5 Tbsp Gochugaru (Korean chili flakes)
  • 6 Tbsp Corn syrup or Oligodang (adjust sweetness to taste)
  • 0.5 Tbsp Salt (adjust to taste)
  • A pinch of Black pepper (freshly ground)

Cooking Instructions

Step 1

Pour 500ml of water into a wide pan. Using a generous amount of water is key for the rice cakes to cook properly.

Add 3 Tbsp soy sauce, 5 Tbsp gochugaru, 6 Tbsp corn syrup, 0.5 Tbsp salt, and a pinch of black pepper to the water. Stir to combine the sauce ingredients, then bring to a boil over high heat.

Once the water is boiling vigorously, add the prepared rice cake soup rice cakes. Stir occasionally to prevent them from sticking together.

After adding the rice cakes and the water comes to a boil again, add the sliced Spam, green onion, onion, Korean chili pepper, and fish cakes all at once. A variety of ingredients makes this dish extra hearty and delicious!

Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until the sauce has thickened to a desirable tteokbokki consistency. Stir frequently to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan.
