- 4 Vienna sausages (or your preferred sausages)
- Apple jam (or your favorite jam)
- 1/2 cup Mozzarella cheese

- Mayonnaise (optional)
- Pinch of salt
- Pinch of black pepper
- Little cooking oil
- Ketchup (optional)
- Mayonnaise (optional)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, prepare the onion and mushrooms that will fill the hot dog buns. Thinly slice half an onion and tear the oyster mushrooms into bite-sized pieces. Trim the tough ends of the mushrooms.
Step 2
Make 2-3 shallow cuts on each of the 4 Vienna sausages. (While this recipe uses readily available Vienna sausages, feel free to substitute with longer hot dog sausages or other types based on your preference and what you have on hand. Adjust ingredients according to your refrigerator’s contents!)
Step 3
Lightly grease a frying pan with cooking oil and add the prepared Vienna sausages. Cook them, turning occasionally, until they are golden brown on all sides. Once cooked, set the sausages aside on a separate plate.
Step 4
In the same frying pan, add a little more cooking oil and sauté the sliced onions until they become translucent. It’s best to cook them over medium-low heat to prevent burning.
Step 5
Once the onions start to turn transparent, add the torn oyster mushrooms and stir-fry them together. When the mushrooms have softened, season with a pinch of salt and black pepper. (There’s no precise measurement for salt and pepper; taste and adjust seasoning to your preference. Season according to your palate!)
Step 6
Sprinkle 1/2 cup of mozzarella cheese evenly over the sautéed vegetables. Let it melt over low heat. (Using a non-stick or coated pan at this stage will make cleanup much easier.)
Step 7
Slice the hot dog buns in half horizontally. Spread a thin layer of apple jam (or any jam you have at home) on the inside of one half of the bun. Place half a slice of cheddar cheese on the inside of the other half.
Step 8
On top of the jam-spread bun half, layer the sautéed mushrooms and onions. Arrange 2 of the cooked sausages on top. Finally, cover with the other half of the bun. (If you prefer it warm, microwave the assembled hot dog bun for about 1 minute. This will make the bun soft and slightly melt the cheddar cheese, which is quite nice! Especially perfect for a cold winter day.)
Step 9
Your delicious and simple hot dog bun snack, filled with mushrooms, cheese, onions, and sausages, is now complete! You can add ketchup or mayonnaise as desired for extra flavor.
