Simple Homemade SIKHYE (Korean Sweet Rice Drink) using Malted Barley Tea Bags
Easy and Quick Sikye Recipe with Malted Barley Tea Bags
Enjoy a refreshingly cool Sikye, the traditional Korean sweet rice drink, perfect for any weather! This incredibly simple recipe uses convenient malted barley tea bags, making it effortless to prepare authentic-tasting Sikye at home. Serve it chilled with a hint of ice for the ultimate treat!
Ingredients (for a 6-cup rice cooker)- 3 bags malted barley tea
- 1 bowl cooked rice (warm)
- 2 liters water
- 180g sugar (adjust to your sweetness preference)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, place 1 bowl of warm cooked rice into your 6-cup electric rice cooker. Gently loosen the rice grains so they don’t clump together.
Step 2
Pour 2 liters of water over the rice in the rice cooker. Using a spoon or spatula, gently stir to loosen the rice grains into the water, being careful not to mash them. It’s important to stir gently so the rice grains disperse.
Step 3
Now, add 3 bags of malted barley tea to the rice water. Once the tea bags are in, set your electric rice cooker to the ‘Keep Warm’ setting and let it steep for 6 to 7 hours. This process allows the rich flavor and sweet enzymes from the malted barley to infuse into the water.
Step 4
After 6 to 7 hours, you should see the rice grains floating on the surface of the clear liquid. Carefully remove the malted barley tea bags. Be gentle when removing them; avoid squeezing them too hard, as this can release excess sediment.
Step 5
Next, transfer the steeped malted barley liquid to a pot. You can leave the rice grains in the rice cooker or scoop them out separately. The rice grains can be used later as a garnish to float on top of the Sikye for a beautiful presentation.
Step 6
Add 180g of sugar to the malted barley liquid in the pot. Heat it over medium-low heat, stirring just until the sugar dissolves completely. Simmer for about 5 minutes after it begins to boil. Avoid boiling for too long, as this can diminish the crisp and refreshing taste characteristic of Sikye. Feel free to adjust the amount of sugar to your liking.
Step 7
Remove the pot from the heat and let the Sikye cool down completely. Once cooled, pour it into clean bottles or containers and store it in the refrigerator to chill. Serve it cold, perhaps with a few ice cubes for an extra refreshing experience!
