Simple Homemade Pancakes from Scratch
Easy All-Purpose Flour Pancakes
Inspired by a heartwarming scene in the medical drama ‘The Good Doctor’ where the protagonist enjoys a stack of fluffy pancakes, I got a strong craving for them! Since I didn’t have pancake mix on hand, I decided to whip up a batch using just basic all-purpose flour. This recipe is designed to guide you through making wonderfully soft and airy pancakes right in your own kitchen with simple ingredients. Enjoy your freshly made, warm pancakes topped with your favorite sweet treats!
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour: 50g
- Sugar: 15g (adjust to your sweetness preference)
- Baking powder: 1/2 tsp
- Milk: 50g (or water)
- Egg: 1 (at room temperature)
- Vegetable oil or butter: A little (for greasing the pan)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
In a mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients: 50g of flour, 15g of sugar, and 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder. There’s no need to sift them; you can add them directly. Giving them a gentle whisk to combine is a good idea to ensure the baking powder is evenly distributed.
Step 2
Now, add the wet ingredients to the bowl. Crack in 1 room-temperature egg and pour in 50g of milk. Use a whisk or a fork to gently mix everything until just combined and no dry lumps of flour remain. Be careful not to overmix; mixing just until combined will result in lighter, fluffier pancakes.
Step 3
Preheat your frying pan over medium-low heat. Lightly grease the pan with a little vegetable oil or butter. You can do this by dipping a paper towel into the oil and wiping the pan surface thinly, or by tilting the pan to spread the oil evenly. This step is crucial to prevent the pancakes from sticking and to achieve a beautiful golden-brown color.
Step 4
Once the pan is hot, pour about half a ladleful of the pancake batter onto the surface for each pancake. It’s best to cook them over medium heat rather than high heat for even cooking. You’ll know it’s time to flip when small bubbles start to appear on the surface of the pancake. After flipping, cook for another minute or so until golden brown. For an extra touch, lightly dust the cooked pancakes with powdered sugar.
Step 5
If you feel your pancakes need a little something extra, get creative with a chocolate pen! I initially thought of drizzling melted chocolate, but then decided to draw directly on the pancake for a bolder statement. The addition of sweet chocolate makes for a delightful treat and a perfect energy boost. Serve with a glass of milk for a satisfying snack or dessert. Feel free to add fresh fruits or a drizzle of maple syrup to customize your perfect pancake experience.
