Simple and Delicious Tuna Pancakes
Easy Tuna Pancakes Recipe (Tuna Patty Style)
These tuna pancakes are a frequent go-to side dish for rice and also make a great appetizer or snack with drinks. They’re incredibly easy to make and satisfying.
Main Ingredients
- 150g canned tuna (drained)
- 1/2 medium onion
- 1/3 medium carrot
- 2 eggs
- Pinch of chili pepper (optional)
Batter Seasoning
- 1 pinch of salt
- 2 Tbsp tempura flour (or pancake mix/all-purpose flour)
- 1 pinch of salt
- 2 Tbsp tempura flour (or pancake mix/all-purpose flour)
Cooking Instructions
Step 1
First, crack 2 eggs into a wide bowl and whisk them well. Beating the eggs until smooth will help the pancakes cook evenly and look appealing.
Step 2
Add a pinch of salt to the whisked eggs and mix. Lightly salting the egg mixture ensures the tuna pancakes aren’t bland and enhances their overall flavor.
Step 3
Wash the onion and carrot thoroughly under running water. Finely mince both vegetables. Mincing them finely will help them mix well with the batter and create a pleasant texture when cooked.
Step 4
Drain the canned tuna well using a sieve. It’s best to use tuna with most of the oil removed, as excess oil can make the pancakes greasy.
Step 5
Add the drained tuna, minced onion, and minced carrot to the egg mixture. Then, add 2 tablespoons of tempura flour. If you don’t have tempura flour, you can substitute it with pancake mix or all-purpose flour. Tempura flour will give the pancakes a crispier texture.
Step 6
Once all the ingredients are combined, mix them well with a spoon or spatula until everything is evenly incorporated. Avoid overmixing, as this can make the pancakes tough. A gentle mix is key.
Step 7
Heat a frying pan over medium heat and add a generous amount of cooking oil. Scoop the batter with a spoon, forming small, round patties, and place them in the pan. Leave some space between each pancake so they are easy to flip later.
Step 8
For the pancakes intended for children, cook them as is. For the adult portions, you can add some finely chopped chili pepper to the batter before placing it in the pan. The chili adds a nice spicy kick that balances the richness and makes them even more delicious! (Omit if you prefer not to have any spice).
Step 9
Cook over medium-low heat until golden brown on both sides. Tuna pancakes cook quite quickly, so it’s important to flip them frequently to prevent burning. Cooking them over high heat can cause the outside to burn while the inside remains uncooked.
Step 10
And there you have it – delicious tuna pancakes! They’ve turned a lovely golden brown and look appetizing. (The color change on the cutting board in the photo is just a funny memory! 😂)
Step 11
You can create such tasty tuna pancakes with simple ingredients and an easy process. They are perfect for a hearty side dish when you don’t feel like extensive cooking, or as a satisfying snack or appetizer!
